Hello everyone,

Need the line by line meanings of the 2 songs mentioned below :

1. Venkataachala nilayam vaikuntapura nivaasam

Pankaja nethram parama pavithram sanka chakra dhara

Chinmaya rupam

CHARANAM:

Ambhjothbhava vinutham aganitha guna naamam

Thumbhuru naarada gaana vilolam

Makara kundala dhara madana gopaalam

Bhaktha poshaka sri purandara vitalam

(sri venkataacahla nilayam )

*Correct me if the wordings are wrong too and need the composers name.

2. Ragam - abogi, talam =aadi.

Here is my attempt at translating one of my favorite pieces:

venkataachala nilayam = the One who is established (nilayam) in venkaTAchala (tirupati)
vaikuntapura vaasam = (is the) One who is the resident of vaikunTa (none other than vishNU)
pankaja netram = with lovely, long eyes (nEtram) like a lotus (pankaja)
parama pavitram = (He) is also the supremely (parama) sacred (pavitram) one
Sankha chakra dhara = Holding the conch (pAnchajanyam) and wields the discuss (sudarSaNa chakram)
chinmaya rUpam = (He) embodies the spiritual (chinmaya) presence

CHARANAM:
ambhujOdbhava vinutam = One who is praised by Brahma (ambujOdbhava - originating - udbhava - from a lotus - ambuja - in vishNU's navel - hence padmanAbha - annamAcharya refers to this in his mOhanam kriti - chEri yaSOdaku siSu itaDU, dhAruNi brahmaku tanriyunitaDE - he is the son of yaSOdA and the father of brahma)
agaNita guna naamam = One whose very name symbolizes countless (agaNita) sterling character traits (guNa)
thumbhuru naarada gaana vilolam = One who delights in the music/song of the celestial bards like nArada
makara kuNDala dhara = adorned (dhara) with crocodile (makara) shaped ear-rings (kuNDala)
madana gOpaalam = you are the handsome (like manmatha - madana) SrI krishNA who herded (pAlam) cows (gO) (I have also heard that gO can also mean senses, and hence gOpAl not only herded cows in brindAvan during dwAparyug, but continues to herd our senses in kaliyug)
bhakta pOshaka sri purandara vitalam = you are SrI purandara viTTala, who protects (pOshaka) his devotees (bhakta)

sudhA = nectarine --- Is this word correct? Can it be 'sadA'
phalamulicci = bestowing fruits
brochu = one who protects
chakkani = well ----- the word 'sakani' may not be correct
samAnamevarilalO = who is equal to you in this World ----- evarilo - seems wrong
kumAra janani = mother of Lord subrahmaNya

OmkAri = One who is embodiment of praNava
lalitE = Mother LalitA
parAtpari = One who is beyond everything
Sankara nAyaki = Consort of Lord Sankara
Sive = Mother SivA (name of Lalita tripura sundari) (literally female energy of Lord Siva)
surAsurulu = Celestials and demons
bhUsurulu = brahmins
pUjincina = worshipped
sOdari = sister of
ISuni = Lord of
vara = Sacred
prasaddhari ---- this word is doubtful - it refers to a VaiShnava kShEtra. May be the first part is 'prasiddha' (may be 'vara' is also part of the name of the kShEtra)

I know a version of venkaTAchala nilayam that is slightly different. It has a few extra lines in the anupallavi and charaNam as well. Cannot remember when/where I learnt this. The sAhityam is as below

In dEvara nAmas, (in the absense of an original meTTu), it is fairly commonly drop some charaNas - In this case, it is looking like 1/3 of each charaNa os dropped!

Does anyone know who was t he first artist to popularize this dEvaranAma in Sindhubhairavi ?

MLV could have done it, as DRS says--in CM, but I have heard Gangubhai Hangal sing it not only in sindhu bhairavi but in the same manner too. HM singers might have sung it that way all the time. Coolkarni might know...
