Venue: Boite World Music Cafe, Melbourne
Date: 03 Nov 2006
Organizer: Boite World Music Cafe
Veena: Ramnath and Gopinath Iyer
Mrudangam: Sridhar Chari
List of songs:
1) karuNimpa - sahAna - Adi - Tiruvottriyur Tyagayyar
2) shObhillu saptaswara - jaganmOhini - rUpakam - Tyagaraja
3) annapUrNe - sAma - Adi - Muttuswami Dikshithar
4) marivERE dikkevarayya - shaNmukhapriya - Adi - Patnam Subramanya Iyer
5) nenarunchi nAnu - mAlavi -Adi - Tyagaraja
6) banTureeti kOlu - hamsanAdam - Adi - Tyagaraja
7) Sri krishnam bhaja mAnasA - tODi - Adi / swarams at "shanka cakra gadA padma vanamAlam" - Muttuswami Dikshithar
8) enna thavam - kApi - Adi - Papanasam Sivan
9) tillAna - dhanasrI - Adi - Swati Tirunal
It was an intimate, acoustic affair. The fact that it was mostly a western audience did not discourage the Brothers from presenting the traditional format with a main piece, thani, thillana, etc. and the audience was very appreciative. The shaNmukhapriya was wonderful (but I could be biased given the fact it's my favourite ragam!) and the tODi essay was elaborate (at least an hour long) with a nice little thani avartanam tagged on at the end. With the artistes' approval, I will look into posting the kucheri on the board.

5 - nenarunchi nAnu - mAlavi/Adi - thyAgarAja
7 - was not a RTP but was Sri krishnam bhaja mAnasA. tAnam was played in ragamalika (Ranjani, Hindolam, Behag + one more I can't recall)
It should be mentioned that this was a mic-less concert so we could here the true sound of the veena-s played very melodiously by the talented Iyer twins. Sridhar played elegantly and softly so as not to drown out the veena-s.

Mohan, many thanks for the correction of the glaring rtp mistake! Didn't know of the veena kutcheri tradition of playing tAnam for the main ragam until earlier today...so much to learn so little time

Rasam - yes the neraval was at 'shanka chakra'. This is the common neraval place for this song but I have heard some do it at 'pankajasana ...' as well.
Arasi - The Iyer brothers will be playing around half a dozen concerts during the season - you can check kutcheribuzz.com for the dates next month.
