12. Thillana
13. Mangalam

Sorry for the late posting.

The audio arrangements were not great. Crowd was packed, and moving in/out. Fair amount of disturbance. Horrendous introduction by some woman who kept shouting "This is going to be the Best Concert ever" in her opening speech which ran for a good 20 minutes and kept the artists waiting. Chaos, in short reigned, and the artists did well to sing inspite of the ongoing banter.

Great Purvikalyani, excellent Simhendramadhyamam alapanai and fantastic rendering. Sanjay knows a lot, a lot, a lot abt concert planning and execution altho I am not the biggest fan of his krithi selection. Accomplished accompaniments. Great thani.

Seems to have been a good concert. Some of my favourite ragas like Sahana, Kedara gowlai and Bhairavi.

What do 'tillana like swarams' mean?

hey mohan,

the swarams sounded like how syllables are pronounced in a thillana. dint see a particular order/meaning in the swarams rendering, perhaps i am wrong. it dint sound lke the traditional style of swarams i have heard rendered at the end of a krithi. it was refreshing, tho, i must say.

you mean he sang the sollakattu or drum syllables instead of swarams?ie.

tha dhi ginathom (Ananda)
dhi thaam tha dhi ginathom (Ananda)

etc?

mohan, i dont know. not much into thillanas to really know the technicalities, it dint sound like swarams to me. and i find it difficult to recall in exact detail, to be honest. i just write down an obervation at the time.

Has Sanjay's voice improved? The last time I heard him in Singapore it was pretty bad.

Nice to see a Kedaragoula main item and more Tamil songs.

And Kanmaniye Solladi is in Kaapi IIRC. HEard MDR's version of it. Beautiful.

Hey Bala.

Good to see u back on these review forums, yo :)!

Well, Sanjay's voice has definitely deteriorated compared to 2000-2001, when I heard him at his peak. That said, he is still able to sing very well within those limitations today without getting carried away, and he seems to be much calmer on the concert stage. He did very well in this kutchery to sing for as long as he did without his voice completely breaking. This was almost 4 hours, and quite an accomplishment to sing as long as he did with so many alapanais. The other thing about Sanjay is the pace of his concerts --- no peaks and troughs, and is very consistent. Guruvayoor Dorai and Nagai are so accomplished, it is a joy to watch them play together.

Ranjani-Gayathri had come here last week, excellent kutchery by the vocalists, but terrible, terrible mridangist. He got all his nadais confused, and ended up confusing the artists themselves during the thani. They got their taalams wrong, thanks to his gimmicks. They sang beautifully though. I will post the song list later this week.

An interesting list. Arukkum Adangadha isn't sung so much in CM concerts, more of a Bharatha Natyam item. Look forward to the Ranjani Gayathri review. That's the comment I always get about their concerts. "Sang beautifully" "tala lapses" (though this time because of the mridhangist).

Oh, I also understand what you mean for item 2. That was exactly what I thought when I first heard Sanjay sing the piece.

tajjham taka jham taka jhaNu taLAngu taka tadhingiNa tom taLAngu taka tadhingiNa tOm taka dhimi taka tadhingiNa tOm

He repeated these lines several times in more than one nadai.
