Yes, I just returned to this thread to read all this.. and without this question from SrinathK and kvchellappa's explanation before that, I too thought that the posting meant that he might have lacked a heart and I wondered what kind of monster mdr could have been, who produced such fabulous music (though I don't like his pronunciation of lyrics :) ).. It was not a "flippant misunderstanding," it was just the way the comment was worded. Nobody's fault. I think CACM meant that if it is true that he suffered a heart attack, then it could have been caused by his cancer.

I would never have asked the question about MDR's lacking a heart, but I"m so glad it was only a misunderstanding and his music was really innocent.

Surprising to hear.MDR's pronunciation was beyond doubt full of bhava and befitting the lyrics.

Full of bhava befitting the lyrics, oh yes.. But was it clear? In my experience of it, I thought he would mumble the lyrics.. Not that he mispronounced them, or disregarded the language, just the rendering, the mumbling.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zW54l3xko0I An example would be at 1:50 and elsewhere too..

A couple of decades ago this type of singing annoyed me quite a bit. I'm a great mdr "appreciator" now. I would kill for that quality of voice, and his imagination. I was pained to learn of his suffering in that other recent thread.

Apologies for the digression.
However, this sentence irked me a bit.

You can only "sacrifice" voluntarily and what rightfully belongs to you!!!
I would say Gandhi's and Rajaji's families had to,unfortunately, pay the price (not "sacrifice") for these men's ambitions and activities. The credit goes to their families!!!

I see what you mean, but is there another way of looking at it? All philosophy we hear and read about, here on Rasikas too, point to universal love as a goal rather than only concentrating on your near and dear ones as life's mission. Both kinds of human existence have pluses and minuses, no doubt.

These great humans were guided by something grander than a limited capacity for loving and caring for a small circle called one's own family. They can be compared to birds which tend to their young when they are helpless and then guide them to be flying off and fending for themselves :)

A lovely post Arasi. Great souls look at the world as a family.
