Very interesting schedule. I am sure it will be precisely analyzed in due course, but at first glance it looks like the average age of the evening slots has come down quite a bit.

disappointed with the schedule(although some combinations look interesting)..It looks as though there is a dearth of violin and mridangam (may be even upapakkavAdyam artist), given the repetition. want to see a change in future.

I am not particularly happy with the slot, given that the same artists are giving evening performances in other sabhas. It does call for some reorganisation, wherein everyone gets a fair chance to perform in all slots(prescribed by MA)..it definitely does not mean that performers who perform at prime slots, when asked to perform in the afternoon slot, are bilittled in any way. Instead the truly talented also get to taste the evening experience at MA.

Forunites,

Reading the posting on the delay of MA's publication of the 88th Annual Conference, I had requested Sri Pappu Venugopala Rao, Secretary to publish enabling the travel and concert attendance plans by the rasikas, in advance. I guess, Sri P.V.acted immediately and obliged.

Music academy schedule is a mixed bag. This does happen when the choice is plenty.Certain artists like Ramakrishnan Murthy,Sandeep Narayan etc get to perform in the afternoon slots. They may be performing in prime slots at other venues.I wish Madurai G S Mani had a slot in the morning.Such a great musician he is,rasikas are not getting chance to listen to him.

I am not that interested in the MA evening slots. Attending them means expense and inconvenience. There will be other opportunities to see those artists.

The afternoon/evening pairing of Sumithra and Abishek is unfortunate. I'm sure the Abishek fans will have bought out all the tickets long before I get to the Academy that morning. Anyway, if she has anything like the same number of concerts as last year, I shall have plenty of other opportunities.

From Sumithra's viewpoint, she has an ideal slot. Lots of people will be attending her concert just so that they can have a seat for the concert that follows.

Some people are willing to endure anything, even good music, to be able to listen to Abu Sheikh. :D

These artists perform at the invitation of MMA or there are lobbyists who solicit for their client or both?

Both.

Lobbying is done not by professional lobbyists but by the gurus who want to promote their favourite students. How do you explain the chance given to certain instrumentalists when persons with longer performance records and presence in Chennai are completely ignored?

Thus you see crowd-pullers as well as little-known performers.

Naaah... they will crowd the canteen and then rush in, probably ruining the last minutes of Sumithra's concert.

Anyway, I suppose I would probably be able to recover the Rs.1,000 front-seat-ticket cost on my way out. Perhaps I could even auction it --- although I don't suppose the MA authorities would be very happy about that/

lol, I'd suggest that we share a ticket, except that I know you'd want to see Sumithra as well :)

I think that I paid a high price to see her MA concert last year but may not have stayed for the next.

Somehow, I find her MA concerts less satisfying anyway. They are not as warm. I hope she has at least as many season concerts as last year, and I'll see her in other places instead.

Few Comparisons in 2013-14 vs 2014-15 evening 1 and 2 slots:
-------------------------------------------------------------
1. We have violin concert of Nagai Muralidharan and Nagai Sriram playing this time .They replace A kanyakumari and Embar Kannan. Congratulations to Nagai Duo I have not heard them yet looking forward.

2. With respect to veena , last year there was emani kalyani lakshmi nArAyana. This year Jayanathi kumaresh is performing instead of emani kalyani.Veena generally also has one slot.

3. Sangeetha Sivakumar,Manda sudha rani, Mambalam Sisters,Lakshmi Rangarajan, Kunnakkudi Balamurali Krishna and Mandolin Srinivas (unfortunately due to his demise) are not singing this year .

They are making way for Aruna Sairam ,Gayathri Girish,Priya Sisters,TV Gopalakrishnan,TNS Krishna and Sriram Parthasarathy. Incidentally last year after the schedule was put for Aruna sairam in MA , Aruna had to cancel and that slot went to sangeetha sivakumar.

# Musicians LIke Gayathri Girish, TNS krishna have performed in evening slots prior to 2013, so they are making a come back .Congratulations

#Personally one of my pet crib that came up many years back is some times artists who are in chennai who sing generally very well are not noticed by academy and at times in historic past I have noticed few other state artists are given at times even passing some great chennai artists. Donot mistake me that I am for any quota , it does not make sense at all, as such merit should never be boxed with geography . I am definitely glad that Sriram parthasarathy who is a terrific singer finds his way in evening slot . I have not yet heard him live and incidentally I have not noticed in the last decade where he has sung in also afternoon slot .So Sriram Parthasarathy finding a way to evening slot is pure musical merit and I am really happy , congratulations to Sriram Parthasarathy let your throat go on a song with your aananda yaazhai meetugirai.

# ON TV GOpalakrishnan I am pretty sure he has not sung as a vocalist in a prime evening slot atleast in the last 10 years- before I donot know, this year he gets it as a vocalist - certainly sangeetha kalanidhi TVG gets the right slot and more importantly I like academy gesture of really showing not just recognition and also keeping limelight on this great multifaceted maestro TVG by making him sing in evening slot.

# Rest of the evening 1 and 2 slots are fixtures like last year and they are all really great artists.Personally Liked this year selection for evening slots, definitely a nice job by Music Academy panelists.

Afternoon slot 2013 vs 2014 comparison:
=====================================
THe following musicians are giving way
Nirmala Rajasekhar (Veena)
V.K. Raman (Flute)

C.S.Sajeev (Vocal)
D.B. Aswin (Vocal)
Pattabhiram Pandit (Vocal)
V. Sankaranarayanan (Vocal)

THe following musicians are getting in

G.R.S.Murthy (Veena)
Jayaprada Ramamurthy (Flute)

Mohan Santhanam (Vocal)
K.Bharat Sundar (Vocal)
H.V.Srivatsan (Vocal)
Vidhya Kalyanaraman (Vocal)

Looks in this list Bharat Sundar and Vidhya Kalyanaraman are promoted from noon to afternoon slot . Congratulations. Looking foward to hear Hemmige Srivatsan - I remember one post where people have said he has a real kvn bhavam.

Comment on Noon slot:
---------------------
Few names are known equally few are new , I am slowly getting into an impression that noon slot is academy gesture to really promote lot of youngsters. I cannot comment on those artist as I have not much clue on significant count of artists. Best wishes to all youngsters.

Comment on Morning slots:
-------------------------
Most of them are SK's, near SK's or just missed SK's. Particular mention I would like to make is TM Krishna .I am assuming that TM Krishna is there as he had made a stand to make his concert as free . (I am going with lastyear post where some one (was that Hnbhagavan)made a mention). I am glad TMK is singing in academy, last year he not participating may have been a big miss for many rasikas. I have a particular liking for vidushi Raji Gopalakrishnan and I see her singing in morning slot.

Best wishes for all the artists and I think MA team has done a great job.

VK,
I donot think the average age of evening slot has come down - it is just the same or slightly Higher even discounting that everyone gets one year older this year than last year ;) . Please Look at the six in evening who went out and the six who came in , see my previous post. Looks like you have misunderstood.

in case you are residing in Chennai,You can pick and chose as u get enough opportunities to listen.Like me if one is coming from outstation,In case there is an evening concert in the last slot,he has to attend the previous one as well.we outsiders do not know the dynamics of getting the tickets.I request Mr. Nick to list the ticketed and the non ticketed organisations.None of the organisations have on line booking facility.

I would like to know if Madurai GS Mani is performing during the season. He is not featured in the academy. In fact such a senior Vidwan should have a morning slot.Any way,it may be that he accepts only a few engagements.

Thanks for Sri V K Raman for the information.
Another observation:
Dr. Narmada is in the accompanying slot.In earlier years She used to be in the company of Sri MS Gopalakrishnan in the violin duet concerts.Of course She deserves to have a prime slot for violin solo.
Prof TN Krishnan is performing in the senior slot and is a regular feature.
The Lalgudi siblings are in the evening prime slot with Dr. Umayalapuram Sivaraman.
As already pointed out by Rajeshnat,Nagai Muralidharan and Sriram are in the evening slot.

And what I find most interesting in the schedule is the choice of the effervescent Anantha Krishnan to accompany Sudha Raghunathan!
It is especially sad to not see U Srinivas; he has pretty much played in every season since the early 80s.

Good observation, mahavishnu... am sure it will be quite a learning curve for Sudha to have a creative percussionist in place of the usual nakkuchikku-nakkuchikku mediocrities she usually has as accompanists. I am more interested in Vani Mahal, Dec 17th where I find that Anantha will accompany Dr Sowmya. Intellectual extempore music like hers needs more Neyveli Narayanans... I hope the combo with Anantha clicks! ymwhisle

Perhaps the senior-most living SK! Keeping fingers tightly crossed for this... the highlight of the season every year. Prof TNK, I understand has undergone major surgery a couple of months back and thankfully is now on a steady path to recovery. He has been off the circuit for a few months and God willing, Dec 25th should mark a triumphant comeback of this senior-most and IMO the best of the so-called trinity. We have this nasty habit of not valuing legends enough when they are alive and performing... #:-s

OK, got it. It was more of a high level estimate when I saw a quite a few of the younger artists who have been knocking at the doors of the evening slot seemed to have gotten in. So I figured that is at the expense of more senior artists who are either relegated to the morning slot or not at all. But you analysis shows that is not the case.

Non quantitatively speaking, over all, don't you feel that the younger generation artists are increasing their dominance and so the complexion is changing? May be it has been a slow burn over the past few years but I am just getting it. This sort of feels like the time when the likes of Vijaya Siva, Sanjay and TMK took over.

Don't understard what TVG is going to sing. He stopped singing for quite some time. His ensemble in Bharat sangeeth utsav was far from satisfying. He was praising Sasikiran ..a sort of ohO.. even Sasikiran felt "ice bucket bath".

Trichur Brothers should have been included. Honestly, they are better than Akkarai Sisters. May be they don't want to detach their father from accompanying him.

Kunnakkudy Balamuralikrishna, unlike the other disciples of PSN, bharat & Abhishek could not shape up. May be his inherent voice structure. Pray this lad should come up and place in next year MA.

Mambalam sisters/Hyderabad brothers/Sangeetha sivakumar- I always wonder how they were figuring in MA- This time, no wonder.

Ashwath narayana- KVN bAni- Nice choice.

There are so much lobbying involved in MA selection. Good to see so many youngsters in the morning slot.

I'm sorry, but that is an utterly ridiculous thing to say!! Even if you think the above (which you are, of course, completely free to do), there is something called "etiquette" in posting on a public forum. It is just sad that an increasing number of posts on the forum pay no attention whatsoever to that aspect. Also, it has nothing to do with being honest - you can absolutely be honest and disagree/provide a negative opinion without saying ludicrous things like the quote above.

Trichur Brothers in 2012 Dec season got the best vocal concert as a team for Junior slot. I think that year sumesh narayanan played mrudangam. I think that same year ramakrishna murthy and sriranjani got award for that category for best vocal and outstanding vocalist respectively.

Usually for few artists ,MA gives a break after an award for a year or two or three(in this case two years) .I have seen historically they doing that for few artists in the past.May be Trichur Brothers will come during dec 2015 season.

Trichur brothers have not appearing at all in MA for the past 2 years. I thought they would appear this year. Hope for the best in next year
Saketharaman is also missing this year.
Vishaka hari is also missing.

I thought of analysising illustrious fathers and his sons/daugther with regard to MA
Maharajapuram srinivasan - Ganesh vishwanathan
KVN- Ashwat Narayanan
TVS - Mahadevan Shankaranarayanan
TNS- TNS Krishna
Our vidhyarthi- Sriranjani S.
Good to see TNSK, Sriranjani and Ashwath –to come to MA limelight. Ashwath may be replacing Pattabhiram pandit, but it is a worth. Ashwath has got lot of potential and strict gurukularm from Padma mami.
I could meet him in KVN-Ariyakkudi function yesterday and wished him. Fortunately, I also met Mahadevan, after the concert TVS gave during the day 2 of KVN-Ariyakkudi function. He was very good. He performed the entire swaram of bairavi alone and this lad has got a lot of potential and in another 2 years, we should see him in MA. Though, he said that he is giving concerts, I don’t see in Chennai. His voice with TVS voice –did not sync very well. But, no issues, it was very good.
Also say Ganesh V on day 3 morning, where Dr.Vageesh is giving a concert. I could not talk to him. But, I was wondering why he could not shine and come to limelight. Entire Maharajapuram has been missing for quite sometime in MA. Bad luck for him. Pray he comes out very fast.
