Parlandu award of Excellence 2014 and Parivadini Concert ser

The yearly Parlandu award of excellence will be given this year to Shri. Varadan - a Mridangam craftsman. This being the centenary year of Vid. C.S.Murugabhoopathi, we thought it will be fitting to honor the person behind the sunaadam.

The yearly concert series will be held this year at the Raga Sudha Hall in November and the performing artistes include Shri. Malladi Suribabu, Shri. Injikudi Subramaniam, Vid. Baby Sreeram, VeeNai Shri. R.Parthasarathi, Vid. R.S.Jayalakshmi, Vid. Srividya Ramanath and Shri. Thoppur Sairam. The young talents featured include SHri. Sruti Sagar, Shri. J.A.Jayanth, Shri. Ramana Balachandran, Shri. Baradwaj Raman, Vid. Sahana Samraj, Vid. Bharati Ramasubban and Shri. Akshay Padmanabhan.

Your gesture of giving award to a Mridangam maker is commendable. Nobody remembers about this poor craftsman, who bestows his life for this job out of sheer commitment and dedication.
SEcondly, you have given me an opportunity to hear Injikudi- I have been longing for many months. The last time I heard him was KGS in Jan.
In your concert series you have provided opportunities for many vidwans/vidushies who are not that frequent in concert platforms. Ardent rasikas will be greatly benefitted.

Mridangam maker Fernandes !

Just like Krishnaswamy morphs into kichAmi, Fernandes becomes farnAndu.
(And written in Tamil as parnAndu.)

But how come it turns into parlAndu?

parnAndu was Palghat Mani Iyer's mridangam maker. Wherever the maestro lived, whether in Palghat or Chennai, parnAndu lived there and his full time work was to make Mani Iyer's mridangams, according to the maestro's specifications.

Last year we had webcast 160 concerts during the Chennai Music Season.This year we have set for ourselves a slightly ambitious target. We are organizing our concert series which will feature 14 talented artists. Give away an unique award and also intend to webcast at-least 500 concerts for FREE. (We have already signed up about 5 sabhas and more in the pipeline as well)

according to me everything need not be scientifically correct, some of them can be on instincts and as in practice..parlandu was known that way...

Wow, it seems that this man invented kutchi mridangam! I had no idea, I thought that both kutchi and kapi [kappi? wouldn't that be coffee?] mridangam went waaay back.

(hmm... It's a good thing he didn't think to patent the whole instrument )
