TNS KRISHNA AT MUDHRA- 16/11

Post by CRama »

The occasion was Samudhra’s twelfth anniversary, celebration of 100 episodes of paalam and release of Mudhra’s Music Planner cum Directory 2015. On the day, Music Historian V.Sriram was honoured with the GNANA SAMUDHRA AWARD by Veena Vidushi E.Gayathri. After the celebrations, the concert started at 7.20 PM. Krishna was accompanied by Delhi Sundararajan on the Violin, R.Ramesh on the Mridangam and KV.Gopalakrishnan on the Kanjira. The list of songs.

Mangalam

Krishna started the concert with a beautiful alapana of ragam Saveri. The alapana was brief though, for about 2 minutes but with authentic pidis and time tested sancharas. The varnam was further embellished with a few rounds of swaras. A breezy touch of Mohanam formed a prelude to the grand composition of Deekshitar. Neraval was done at the Madhyama kala phrase- Parijatha thanumoolam. Elabrate cracker swaras added glitter to the entire presentation. Raga Varali was taken up for elaboration. Krishna sang it for 5 minutes revealing the multi hues of the ragam. After the violin, a virutham - Kaavi Kamala Kazhaludan Serthenai Kaatharulaai from Kandar Alankaram by Arunagirinathar
was sung which had very touching lyrics and Kaa Vaa Vaa followed. Elaborate kanakku oriented swarams were sung in the second kalam at various places –like kaa vaa, kandaa vaa, muruga vaa, pazhani malai urayur , malai urayur etc.

Mariveregathi was indeed presented in the most appropriate tempo to provide the visranthi quotient for the concert. The kriti in Dharmavathi was a rare one and new to me. Here also he sang some sparkling swaras at Vara Dharmavathi – third line in Charanam. The all traversing swaras were pretty refreshing. (To be continued)

(Continued)
Kedaragowla was chosen for detailed exploration. The detailed alapana which ran for a solid 15 minutes had TNS flavour throughout with the judicious handling of jarus, brighas, to the enjoyment of discerning rasikas. His voice which can easily traverse three stayis without any hiccup facilitated leaps and jumps and swims at the appropriate junctures, both in the alapana and thanam. The entire alapana and thanam was very much delightful.

Krishna has aptly followed the footsteps of his legendary dad in composing thematic pallavis to suit the various occasions. (Remember his pallavi Sankarabharanai azhaithodi vaadi kalyani pallavi darbarukku). Today the pallavi was
Karuna samudram Jnaana Bhaskaram Radhaa lolam namaami
Bhaktha paalam Gopalam bhajami.

He has seamlessly combined mudhra, samudhra, paalam, jnana(samudhra), radha and bhaskar. But the pallavi is not just a string of words. It has got meaning woven into it. The pallavi was in a complex Sankeerna triputa 2 kalai. On the whole the pallavi was presented intelligently with aesthetics properly emphasised. Elaborate neraval and long array of kanakku swaras and kuraippu added weight to the entire presentation. Trikalam was done with precision. Ragamalika swarams included Kapi and one more ragam- I forgot to note. Neverthless it was never dry and boring. It requires lot of home work to do such a pallavi in such a tricky thalam and sustain the audience interest. The tail enders were also soaked in melody and bhava.

Delhi Sundararajan was solid support to Krishna in his raga essays and swara returns. His alapana of Varali, Kedaragowla were enjoyable.

R.Ramesh played exceptionally well with his versatility shining right from the beginning. He played with great clarity, and his sense of anticipation must be one of the best, as demonstrated in his playing for all the swaraprastarams and pallavi. Kanjira also supported well. The thani by both the artistes received repeated applause from the audience. This concert brought back memories of many concerts of TNS with the same accompaniments.

The concert went on till 9.50 PM. The late start of the concert was due to the function. The day commenced with a high tea for the audience followed by a dance programme before the function. The function which commenced at 6 PM went as per the schedule and no out of relevance speeches. Jathiswar - Radha and Mudhra Bhaskar’s son sang the prayer song- Ganapathe Mahamathe in Kalyani. He sang very well. Definitely to blossom into a versatile singer in a few years. But thankfully the organisers and the artistes made good for the delayed start of the concert. Of course, the audience got reduced after 9.15 PM. An excellent concert for two and half hours. I have to hear more of Krishna’s concerts in this season

surapAla'sannutE is given by Harikesanallur Vaidyalingam as a composition of his uncle Muttiah BhAgavatar, but is actually a composition of VINa VenkaTagiriyappa. The latter has published it himself in his textbook sangItAmRta'sAra [1938] which included kIrtanas by the trinity, SadAshiva Rao, Mutthiah bhAgavatar, vAsudEvAcArya, vINE SeSaNNa and vEnkaTagiriyappa himself.

Thank you for the review . TNS Krishna is indeed shaping up very well - strong voice and in particular quite a lot of kalpana . It was a tough choice for me to hear him and also not miss his father, had to let go this.
