concert of shri R.Suryaprakash in muscat on 15/11:2014

Post by sranjani »

The concert of shri R.Suryaprakash organised by Thyagaraja samithi muscat on 15/11/2014 AT THE Krishna temple hal for Trinity daywas indeed a treat to all the rasikas here. The initial kritis which consisted of Mahaganapathim in nattai Dikshitar, , sarsasama dana ,kapinarayani thyagaraja, jootha mu rare , arabhi Thyagaraja one could find glimpses of shri Madurai mani/T.V . Shankaranarayanan especially in swaraprastharas .( His guru ) But we were in for a excellent kalyani , the main ragam and as he was to render the dikshitar 's abhayamba ( from abhayamba navarnam) the raga alapana was beautifully rendered madhyamam in kalyani is used as a flat note by dikshitar in this kriti. Shri
Suryaprakash 's kalyani alapana was rendered using the sancharas keeping this kriti in mind .there was a cascade of swaras which left all spell bound Rtp in khanda triputa composed on the divine trinity which was also suggestive of the musical trinity "" thyagarajam bhajare shyma krishna priyam guruguha karanam ""( lord Thyagaraja of tiruvarur) The end pieces were kandan karunai, krishna nee begane and a lovely thillana in suddha sarang composed by him. The kutcheri was a excellent team work accompanied by a very talented Shri S.P Ananthapadmanabha onthe violin , shri P.K. Rammohan and Master Raghuram hari ( both from Muscat) . This was a four hour concert by shri Suryaprakash., and one could feel the sincerity , honesty and genuiness in the singing which was also appealing to all and will always remembered by the true music lovers of muscat in the years to come.

SRanjani,
I add my welcome to CRama's. Hope you continue to give us reviews from Muscat!

I look forward to listening to Suryaprakash several times this season. My rather late season starts with his Music Academy concert. Of course, there is no likelihood of listening to a four hour concert as you did, during the season.

Hoping to hear an elaborate kalyAni, and that AbhOgi too :)

Wishing Surya a super season!

I am pleasantly surprised and pleased to learn that there is a Hindu temple in Muscat and that Carnatic music concerts are held there !
I spent two years teaching in the Arab world in the seventies and at that time no non Islamic places of worship or even gatherings were allowed in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia etc. Bajans were held in secret in private residences. Now I know that Carnatic concerts are held in some Arab countries as Dhuabai etc. It may still be a taboo in Saudi Arabia,Kuwait. Oman must be one of the progressive kingdoms.

Knowing Surya, I am sure he must have sung the chUtAmu rArE correctly. Some times even so called learned reviewers in The Hindu misspell lyrics. This may the case here too. Even many artists make such mistakes in pronunciation, when they are not familiar with Telugu or Sanskrit.

Thanks all for welcoming me to the forum though I have a concert listening experience spanning more than 40 years this is the first time I am writing a written review. I am a Carnatic singer myself so have to be really conscious of the pronunciations etc . Suryaprakash was absolutely perfect in singing the lyrics in the correct pronunciation .

Oh, please Jigyaasa. Let's not even go there :) I shudder to think of what the /ch/ phoneme makes it sound like in Hindi.
It is best to think of these words as composed in the languages that the composer intended. There is enough butchering going on without parallel references in other languages.

This was a four hour concert
Each krithi in kalyani encompasses a certain segment of raga swaroopam , I particularly find this kalyani abhayambA is one of its kind - the canvas of kalyani is covered significantly more in raga swaroopam.

The pallavi line is very nice , looks like possibly shyama sastri krithi was not sung- the third trinity was perhaps restricted to only shyama krishna priyam in the pallavi line.

...
4 hour concert , Iooks muscat is like toronto, bay area , NJ/NY way. Keep writing more concerts and artists in the future. Thank you for the review- sranjani.

Agreed :D My issue wasn't with the ch/j at all. It was just the split of the word at the wrong place. That's what reminded me of the Hindi word in the first place.
