R.Vedavalli @ SKGS - Hyderabad - 20/11/2014

Post by Aditto »

Smt.R.Vedavalli performed at the 5th Annual Festival of Sri Karthikeya Gana Sabha. This is her second performance in Hyderabad this year.

The concert is supposed to be start at 7 P.M after a lecture demonstration by Sangeetacharya Dr.Vyzarsu Bala Subrahmanyam on "Importance of Samvadi In Music". This lecture demonstration went a bit beyond 7 P.M which was followed by felicitation of Sri Bala Subrahmanaym. After a brief introduction about Amma, the concert started at 7.30 P.M.

The accompanists for the concert are :

Sri Dwaram Satyanarayana Rao on Violin.
Sri P.Jaya Bhaskar on Mridangam.
Sri P.V.Ramana Murthy on Ghatam.
Smt.Sumitra Vasudev as Vocal Support.
Smt.Sumati Krishnan as Vocal Support and Tambura Support.

The Song list includes :

1. Vanajakshiro - Kalyani - Ramanathapuram Srinivasa Iyengar - Neraval, Swaram
2. Ninnu Joochi - Sowrastram - Patnam Subrahmanya Iyer
3. Ninnu Sevinchina Janulaku - Subbraya Sastry - Yadukula Khamboji
4. Nijamuga Rama - Keeravani - Poochi Srinivasa Iyengar - Ragam, Neraval, Swaram
5. RTP - Todi
6. Dasara Nindisa Beda - Purandara Dasa - Tilang
7. Thillana - Hamsanandi - Mudicondan Venkatarama Iyer
8. Pavamana - Sourastram & Swasthi Prajbhya

The concert commenced with the Kalyani Varnam and the sound system problem. There was this high pitch screaming from the mikes. Unfazed Amma was singing the varnam despite the problem with the mike. Neraval and Swara prastaram followed. The next song was Ninnu Joochi in Sowrastram. This was followed by Yadukula Khamboji alapana and the mike started screeching. After singing for about a minute, she signaled Sri Satyanarayana Rao to play the violin. The mike has cost us a wonderful YK alapana for sure. The song was Ninnu Sevinchina Janulaku. By the end of the song, the sound system settled. The Keeravani alapana was handled by Amma first and later by Sumitra. After the violinist's alapana of the raga, 'Nijamuga Rama' started and the neraval was at 'vasudalO nIdu vara bhaktalaku'. This was followed by swara prastara by Amma and Sumitra.

The next item was RTP in Todi. Alapana was done in two stages by Amma and Sumitra. After the violinist's return, tanam started. After the tanam in todi, I was expecting a ragamalika and it turned out to be the ghanaragamalika tanam. The pallavi line was 'Gaanalola Karunaalavala' which was shared between Amma and Sumitra. I am not sure of the talam and the only talam I know is Godrej (talam means key/lock in Telugu). The swarakalpana started and it was like this for some time : Amma, Sumitra and Violin. After a minute, after Amma's swarakalapana, the violinist took over and Sumitra smiled and asked him to continue. The ragamalika swarams were in Atana, ? and Behag(?). Tani followed.

Dasara Nindisa Beda, Thillana and Managalam followed by Swasti Prajbhya.

I have no knowledge of music when it comes to raga identification, tala and the subtleties of swarakalpana. I can only say that the music is divine.
