I agree and look forward to listening to these concerts.
The absence of veena artists representation in reasonable proprtion in annual festivals in chennai as well as other cities is jarring.
The annual veena festivals with 30 min. slots are not enough as extensively discussed in another thread. Someone among the leading artists has to stand up and take it up. Change.org can help [-x ?
I have noticed something more today. I was looking at Visakha Music academy website.
http://www.hamara.in/smartsite/a/vma/
If you scroll down, they have something called artiste registration form where artists can upload their resumes probably for considertation for an opportunity by the sabha, which is a good thing. But in the list of category,
There is whistle, key board but there is no veena !! :-@ !
I am amazed .

Yesterday's TVS concert was awesome accompanied by nAgai muraLidharan/B.harikumAr/venkatramaNan.his main in kalyANi himAdrisuthE was of a high class.the AlAp reminded me of kumAr gandharvA.the performance by TVS will definitely make the audience of the north India think very high of CM.TVS's work will take CM's reputation to better heights,no doubt.

Yes. Ganesh, yesterday TVS concert was top class. But there are a few cribs for me. The same songs/pattern which we have been hearing for more than thirty years. That too Sakalgraha bala neene as the filler - sans thalai or vaal.- i.e, starting from anupallavi and skipping two charanams. I have seen he is the only singer who sings this song from the anupallavi. Similarly Muruga muruga also he sings from the anupallavi.

The audio balancing in TVS concert was nice. And no juggleries in broadcast.
CRama, note that TVS is maintaining his 'old pitch' (sruti) like his time tested songs! This is but amazing.
His son Mahadevan sings well and his voice was quite audible in the recording.

Sivaramakrishnan: I love TVS's music for exactly the reasons that you both mentioned. Although he is repetitive and sings from a limited bank of iritis, his voice quality, standard of presentation and general consistency are simply superb. If it clicks with the right accompanists of the quality of Nagai and a top-end mridangist, there is no stopping him and his deluge of sarvalagu swarams.
CRama: I personally find there is a great appeal in starting Muruga muruga from the anupallavi. I could go either way with Sakala graha bala.
That said, TVS is best heard without "pinpAttu", with all due respect to his son Mahadevan. TVS has such an amazing sAreeram that no understudy vocalist can complement his singing.
When TVS sang here in the US last spring, he brought out some very rare compositions from his repertoire (Swati Tirunal gems, Kotiswara Iyer compositions etc IIRC). But I heard so many in the audience disappointed that he did not sing his usual MMI-esque classics!

Re: AKASHVANI SANGEET SAMMELAN- 2014
mahavishnu,
I have to say the following:
1.Even though TVS may not depend on vocal support, Mahadevan's voice provided sort of a cushion to his father's and that made the right impact. Thanks to AIR for enabling the second voice audible. And note, he was not given exclusive chance and that defined the role clearly.
2.As you have noted, select old gems are the 'MMI hall marks' without which he recitals would be 'incomplete'. It's happy to note from CRama that TVS has handled quite a number of new kriti-s.
3. It's told that MMI didnt sing 'Sakalagrahaphalaneene' in concerts since the Navagraha (Vaara-kritis) were customary for him. Perhaps the Guru wished TVS not to be bogged down by the theory!

Re: AKASHVANI SANGEET SAMMELAN- 2014
MMI would neither sing 'grihabalamEmi' (rEvagupti), and when questioned once by my grandfather (though he knew the song), he said that how could he sing that song, because he was a firm believer in the power of the planets.
That said, TVS's repetition of songs over the last 35 years is simply tiresome. I once asked him why he couldn't sing 'bAlagOpAla' and he said that if it was Bhairavi, he could only sing tanayuni brOva or koluvaiyunnADE. His uncle sang many of the Navavaranams including Kambhohji, Bhairavi etc., and almost all the Navagraha kritis. I have never heard a single Navavaranam or Navagraha from TVS. Had an easy life unlike MMI who had his tough days earlier in life. No need to work hard. Most unfortunate.

Yesterday, 9 Nov, at 9.30PM, there was the violin concert of S.Harikumar who belongs to TVM. He has studied under Chalakudy Narayanaswamy and Dr.L.Subramaniam and follows the L.Subramaniam bani. I could not make out whether it was double violin invented by l.Sankar. The sound was unique like LS and he played very well. Paridanamichithe, Sree Kanthimathim (with thanam) and Chaliye (Brindavansaranga). I was hearing for the first time. I heard that he is settled abroad.
From 10.30 to 11, there was the Mridangam solo of Thrissur Narendran.

CRama: You are absolutely right about the L. Subramaniam style in Harikumar's music. However, the instrument is a customized version of a 7-string electric violin called "violectra" (made by a company in the UK) and not the double violin of L Shankar. Here is a video of him playing the instrument: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-OSJozJlvoCRama wrote:Yesterday, 9 Nov, at 9.30PM, there was the violin concert of S.Harikumar who belongs to TVM. Does maturation come by age or experience ? AR's poorvikalyANi remained the same that he sang in pallavi darbar couple of years before, but this time the sangathis had a gap in between making the listening not that tedious.he sang 3 items.PoorvikalyANi- meenakshimemudham,LGJ - kamAs thilAnA and pavamAna.parur Ananthakrishnan, natEsan and guruprasanna did their excellently.

Yesterday, 13 Nov at 10 PM there was the Veena concert of Smt. Kasi Visalakshi. She hails from Andhra, but had training under Mysore Doreswamy Iyengar. She played Anudinamu (Begada), Viharamanasa (Kapi-ST), and Ethavunera. It was very good concert with good nadam, manodharmam, visranti and style of presentation.

SumitrA sings (real) AbhEri (shuddha dhaivatham).a SS no.can't get the starting of the kriti.her diction is not that clear.started with asAvEri varNam,EasamanOhari kriti of MD and the AbhEri now.violinist very competent.pannaka bhooshaNuni is taken up for neraval followed by good round of svarams. So the kriti is ninnuvinamarigalada I think.singing neevAda in sAranga.the main is kEdAragowLai.T kriti in Adi.tuLasi?O.k.folks,let me listen. No its different one.The AlApanai was o.k.not sounded like a vEdavalli school !
