sri Pattabirama Pandit ji @ TSS Pozhichalur
Sri Pattabirama Pandit ji (with Sarvasri TKV Ramanujacharyulu on violin, Neyveli B Venkatesh on mridangam & S Venkataramanan on Kanjira) gave a very good concert to our rasikas this evening. Starting with Saveri raga varnam, he presented Nagaswarali (sree pathe - famous one by DKJ sir), pantuvarali (ninnu neara namminanu ra) hindolam (maa ramanan), bilahari (karpagambige) and took Madyamavati for Main(Paalinchu kamatchi) and concluded the concet with a javali in behag, tillana. Madyamavati alap was SUPERB - his hard work was exhibited well. TKV sir also gave back the alap atshara suddham - we were all lucky today to listen the concert. Neyveli sir's thani was THANI SPECIAL by itself! Venkataramanan was running close to Neyveli sir in thani. congrats.

I see a pattern for every vocalist career . When a vocalist is young there is a bunch of senior co-artists especially mrudangam artist who consciously expose great quality youngsters and for few years the nexus of co-artist-sabha gives a lot of limelight to that vocalist . I discovered pattabhi for the first time in year 2005-2006 when a very prominent co artist accompanied him. What also happens is the youngster never remains a youngster , the harsh reality sets in when the artist grows older and becomes a not so young vocalist. He/She has to swim and expose to performances all by himself/herself. The truth for pattabhi is he has only three concerts in this premargazhi and margazhi season, for his caliber he should have more.
In kutcheris.com pattabhi was listed thrice and I went with this as the start was early expecting a long concert. Pattabhi had an extraordinary team too. Pattabhi started with sarasooda varnam , in a slightly mellowed down voice which goes well as the ragam is saveri . The mrudangam artist was in full form from word go and kept egging him to sing with a racy pitch . I did not hear the violin that much for varnam but still ok . THe sound was adjusted right , it was not that it was bad before.
Shripathe , a nagaswaravali krithi was well done by pattabhi . THough the start was very much like his guru KVN , the laya orientation in swarakalpana was well done with long dose of kalpana swaras with venkatesh just taking it to sheer joy. Pattabhi and pantuvarAli as a submain is so common for atleast me , most of his concerts I have heard him sing that . I liked his rendition, very very clean pracheena submain ragam and he sang with a share of anthakalathu proportion . THe neraval was just there not as great as KVN but in swaras he made up well though his voice bit lost a volume towards the end.
In the two fillers hindolam came out far better , bilahari was too quick ,it did not have much quality. Madhyamavati as a main is more favoured by flute artists than vocalist . I liked pattabhi's madhyamavati , his kvn guru bhakthi came in and stayed throughout. Out of all madhyamavati palinchu of shyama sastri is very special. I wrote a post few weeks back when some one said this krithi was not sung , it was the same pattabhi who sang some time back in an earlier concert few months back and kamakshi kadAksham was very much alive . The alapana oozed with immense classicism . It was measured and also satisfying . The krithi start was so beautiful with a little restrained play by venkatesh i latched with the team's bhavam . Neraval narayanaswami came in full form especially when he started the neraval in pidis like karunya moorthi . Swaras had a bit of kanakku but he weaved really lovely creative patterns(there is a significant departure from kvn school there).
IN the tukkadas he kept up the kvn bhakthi , may be a shade away from KVN would have been better for a contrast . Both behag and the paras thillana was well done.
Neyveli Venkatesh was superb , may be little aggressive in the start of varnam . He has one of the fastest fingers and I loved his aggression , he gave patttabhi and all of us joy . Venkataramanan played the best in tani and he teamed up well . Particularly in tani when venkatesh played only with thoppi left for a minute,he was wonderful.
The real darkhorse was this srirangam native violinist . We dont talk much about TKV ramanujacharyulu. His roots are in andhra and he is settled in srirangam because he works in AIR-Trichy(May i know who is the guru of TKV RamanujAcharyulu). His play has not adulterated with any non carnatic sangathis(srirangam effect without mylapore adulteration
) , great press and great play.
Pattabhi at times loses his weight and his voice dries a bit. In that process he some times brings a bit of athattal (gesticulation) , he should make a conscious choice to avoid that. He also gives few brownie points unlike kvn especially a bit more of swara prasthana magic, but the magic of KVN is almost there- still some ground to cover in sowkhyam.
This is my second concert in pozhichalur ,few years back i wrote a review of my first concert here at pozhichalur. i love this sabha and place when it starts so early with only one evening concert it gives more concert time . I was thinking pattabhi could have gone for a pallavi but that did not happen. The team still rocked.
Overall an excellent concert for 2 hours and 35 minutes.
