Vijay Siva - Karthik Fine Arts - 3.12.14

Post by grsastrigal »

Karthik Fine arts-inaugural function at NGS main hall- 4.30 PM
Date 3.12.14

Vijay Siva
Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi
K.Arunprakash
M.Guruprasad

I went to this concert mainly to listen to Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi. Rarely, one sees (hears) LV plays as an accompanist. Moreover, I happened to listen to GJR &LV concert 10 days back for KVN Memorial function at Sivaswamy Auditorium, Mylapore. It was a great concert. Whether as a duo or single, LV is a class apart.

Arunprakash is another gentleman I wanted to see, how he performs for Vijay Siva !!!

Ninnu jUchi dhanyu – sowrAshtram- PSI

Ninnu vinA mari galadha- ritigowla-Shyama Sastri
Neravali in “shyAmakRSNanutA bhaktaparipAlanamu seyudaku”

PantuvarAli – rAGam followed by “raguvara nannu”-Thyagaraja , neraval in
“manasuna nIki marulu konnAnu”

Darbar raga kriti “meena nayan neevu- by Subbaraya sastri.
atAna –rAGam- chedE budhi mAnura- Thyagarajar- Swaram in Sri vAsudEvA.

Todi- Main- kamalAmbikE- Dikshitar- navAvarna kriti, preceded by a slokA “kalyAnI”
-Neraval in “viyadAdi bhUtakiraNE vinOdacaraNE aruNE”- (S)
Tani

vadivEru tirisoolam-vruttam- followed by “enRaikku siva krupai” of nIla kanta sivan kriti. (Sindu bairavi, behAg and mukhAri)

mudhukArE yasOdha- AnnamachArya-kurinji

tuLLumadha-Tiruppugazh-Hamsanandhi

Mangalam.

How many times one hear a Dikshitar’s navAvarnam in todi that to from DKJ school ? It was amazing. Unheard Ritigowla from Shyama sastri is another beauty. Darbar too.

It was another ‘kalyAna sAppAdu” with different varieties (composers) and ultimate Todi as “rasam”. No need to praise Vijay siva as almost full house on a working day tells the rasikAs for this great artist.

LV-each and every kriti’s return or solo in Todi was brilliant.

Arunprakash showed his “real skill: along with Guruprasand and presented a nice tani.

Dear grssastrigal,
LV's accompaniment is very good.I have attended a few concerts and she does accompany Ravikiran some times.

Because of Lalgudi Sir's stature, rasikas do not give due recognition to GJR-Lv.But their violin duet is the best and brings SOWKYAM to our mind.Very soft bowing in Lalgudi bani is the highlight.
To some extent i sincerely feel that Sri GJR should start accompanying role in addition to his duet with LV.This will help them to get better recognition.

Stellar concert from Vijay Siva. Carefully picked out pieces and exceptional singing with a great team. Great experience!

His recent concert at BVB (day before yesterday) was also fantastic. hnbhagavan would have been thrilled as he sang "Akshara linga vibho" for main.

Is playing thani for tisra ekam substantially different from rupaka talam? Never felt the groove of the talam (as someone like Anantha R. Krishnan seems to provide) but could detect impressive patterns with liberal use of white space :-)

Very nice program. I have never failed to both enjoy and be moved by Vijay Siva's performance, although watching in a hall that size is almost more like TV than live.

WOuld certainly like to see more of Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi. Apart from a short solo concert, which was presented for children in a school, and the duet performances, I think I have only seen her play for Vijay Siva.

I would like to see both GJR Krishnan and Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi to assume the role of accompanists in addition to their duet performances.

It's really a loss for carnatic music that GJR no longer accompanies. IIRC he did accompany RKS 3-4 years back at MA. I am sure like his legendary father, he can elevate the concert to a higher level. LV on the other hand, does accompany but not too often, and haven't seen her do it outside of Chennai. It's our loss.

The way the 'DKJ school' open the pallavi of Kamalaambike- todi) has been ecstatic to me always. (A 'precarious' Nishadam with shades of dhaivatam).
Any recording of this (VS) concert available?

Moreover, "sAhitya shuddham" (clarity) is evident in VS concert. This has been discussed many times. Sitting in balcony of a size of NGS, i could hear his words clearly.
It is interesting to mention here- Normally the first sowrashtram kriti of PSI- I have heard from many artists- Ninnu jUchi tannu dachi". VS sings as Ninnu jUchi dhanyu dachi. I was surprised to see his way of singing and referred the book and I found VS was right. This would be possible only one goes for asura sAdhagam and love for the kritis. It was 'fast track" kriti. You could not check the words at that speed Still, VS sees that the words are pronounced properly.

About a couple of months back, his concert was at MES Kalavedi,Bangalore in the company of Amritha Murali. The hall had about 60 people at best.Vyjayanti mala was present. He has a dedicated band of followers.
During the Ramamnavami festival at Fort Hs,Bangalore,he requested for silence and no speeches. He remarked that from the Dias/stage,he sees that people are mostly engaged in mobile phones and some in illegal recording and as such no sincerity in listeners these days.He exhorted people to pray Lord Rama by silently listening to music.
