Year on Year kutcheri season brings something new for me . I have not heard sriram parthasarathy at all and I just decided to hear him for the first time on a working day. The concert was at 7pm i just went on time . The previous rudrapatnam brothers just got wrapped up with Srimushnam Raja Rao sir. Like Academy i wish the artists on stage quickly left but there was bit more inertia and when Sriram started with mike adjustments it was 07:20 pm start . While the two percussionisits B Sivaraman and KVG were happy with the initial set up , sriram asked for a dil maange more in volume and BUGP kind of toyed with sriram . I personally felt for the whole concert the vocal volume was high .

Sriram announced every krithi .This series was called paddhati series and I dont know if his songs are in line with that. He started well in nattai, a lovely krithi with arresting swaras is the usual norm but in nAt i, I did not get there as I found percussion just not gelling that well with the vocalist . Sriram has a strong vocal power no questions but I found his throw was bordering on bit of shouting .The saveri shankari shamkuru is vocally more expressive in comparison with other saveris , but sriram could have bit mellowed , there was quite a bit of athattal there .

The next he announced a sadguru krithi in yadhukula kamBodhi,I was thinking this will be a volume antidote , the alapana was very very TNS'que who is his parama guru (his guru is NSG). The alapana was bit high in volume and i decided to go back to a spot where the volume doze does not kill me. There are advantages when only 30 come in a 100 hall capacity .He sang beautifully the krithi and his enunciation was clear not that i care , but writing that for those who care. The GN composition filler jaganmohanakrishna just did not come out well - gnb as a composer to sriram is work in progress - no kuthoohalam yet.

Few of my acccquintances have said his brigas and ideas are very good , I felt that statement was bit of cliche as i did not spot that in first four yet. May be brigas yes with a strong voice but not that much of ideas yet .The ideas kept pouring in todi alapana ,the minutes are less in alapana but the nadaswara intensity was on me there , superb ideas and briga laden voice hit so many spots of carnatic todi azhuttam. He sang in two stages with intermediate violin return and his todi alapana was the most impressive phase of the concert - sriram captured my heart in todi alapana .HIs main krithi rendition was clean with little more extra watchfulness in words . The neraval in vadivel maruvum came out well but i felt he should have pushed more that too considering that this was the only neraval. The swaras in todi had a significant dose of kanakku which was ok but when he moved towards the end with sarvalaghu he was certainly too loud.

The viruththam in desh was lovely, very detailed in pachai ma malai may be he did a graha bedham from desh to another besh raga which went out of fuse in my head. The end with another parama guru composer Sankara iyer was imminent and i am always floored with that composition rama nama in desh - TSI what a great composer and what a besh desh . THe sindhubhairavi venkatachala nilayam was very good with few extra gamaka swings in magana kundala - certainly in desh and sindhubhairavi the hindustani ustad effect was high. The perumale string of excessive words was ok and he ended with mangalam. Felt he could have sung more.

BU Ganesh Prasad has a very lovely azhuttam and I felt he was the most consistent in the whole team. I liked his sweetness when he said at the end of second round of todi alapana he explicitly offered a choice to sriram as to whether he has to play or whether sriram would continue with krithi . THe mrudangist B sivaraman could have had more left azhuttam or rather more strength in his mrudanga adi (hit). He played desh so beautifully i thought he transformed mrudangam to near tabla there. KVG gave very able support at times his azhuttam was more right than mrudangist and in tani his patterns were more clear.

There are few things that did not go well :
------------------------------------------
1.Sriram in short has lovely briga laden voice and very TNS'que. I think his posture is very much like NSG very close to mike and not much movement at all from the microphone . But as such with his voice throw ,he can consciously be seated perhaps few inches away from mike.

2.The songs that he sang are not rare at all. Barring the main in todi almost every song he was referring notes and singing . I was quite surprised when he even referred for the first nattai and also pachai mA malai. I am not bothered about visual disturbance at all, but few referrals , i aurally lose the extra creative sangathis.

I am sure he will not do #2 in his Dec 16th, evening II slot in academy. Looking forward to hear him again.

Overall a very good concert for 1 hour and 50 minutes.

Sriram Parthasarathi is an artist to watch.
A singer with a vision.
Perhaps his involvement with film music keeps him very busy.
