GV for Naada Inbam, 7/Dec

Post by sankark »

Gayatri Venkataraghavan - vocal
Vittal Ramamurthy - violin
Neyveli Narayanan - mridangam
BS Purushothaman - khanjira

Went in as she was starting the mmg song

gajamukha vandisuva - mAyAmALavagowLai - Adi - vAdirAja swami (s, just sparkling absolutely lovely swarams)
kAsi visAlAkshIm - gamagakriyA - rUpakam - MD (r ns@kAsi puraVasinIm karuNA rasa laharIm). this AlApanai will stay with me for quite a while
gnAna sabaiyil - sArangA - cApu - pApanAsam sivan
mAyammA yanininnE - Ahiri - Adi - SS (wow! simply wow, especially the sthiramani nammithi, she sang it from snnn to sssn, not able to recall if that I how I heard it so far, but this stood out today)
sripathE nI pada - nAgaswarALI - Adi - T (2nd speed electrifying swarams)
satatam tAvaka - karaharapriyA - Adi - ST (rns@mama hrdi vasAnisham, tani). Again great AlApanai & violin return. 2nd time at the same venue from her. There is a pArAmukham Enayya by PS in this ragam, is that in circulation at all anymore? I have heard this in an MMI tape a while back.
pAninaindhu Uttum thAyinum (virutham) in mOhanam, shanmugapriyA (excellent vocalization) followed by
thEnena inikkum thiruvarutkadalE - shanmugapriyA - Adi - vaLLalAr
tillAnA (dhIm dhIm thananana dhIm) - rEvati - Adi - LGJ
thirupugazh (nAdi thEdi)
managLam (pavamAna, all stanzas?)

All in all a great way to start the season. Voice was in fine fettle; IMO one of the best voices at present times. What else to say except that the team did excellent in their own areas. ~80% full eventually coming down to 30 - 40 folks by curtains down.

AIR has recorded the entire concert, so can expect to be broadcast sometime soon.

It was an excellent concert. The concert started with Kedaragowla varnam. Her voice being in fine form, the alapanas of Poorvikalyani and Kharaharapriya were best in terms of manodharmam and enunciation. Both the kritis as well as other kritis like Gajamukha vandisuve, Gnanasabayil, Thiruvarutpa in Shanmugapriya are not common on the concert circuit. My only crib- the concert was for two and half hours and concluded at 8.45 PM. It could have gone further till 9.15 PM. The previous day Aiswarya sang upto 9.15 PM. I will be very happy if I can hear three raga alapanais in a concert. Unfortunately, the standard fare is two ragas. That leaves me wanting in most of the concerts. Last year also, I experienced this. With better planning, they can give three alapanais. But....

It is still early in the marathon (season), so the voice needs to be preserved. Can't be singing too many 3 hour concerts.

Suresh
There are very few concert opportunities where we have a start time of 6 0r 6:15 pm(one concert per evening is rare , mostly everywhere it is back to back evening I and II concert). To me stretching from 2 1/2 to 3 is a stretch worth it, we could have had a pallavi too .This concert is on a weekend sunday too and it appears she had a great voice on 7th Dec as per OP.

The crowd dwindling towards second half is always there and that need not be a criteria. I agree to sing any thing more than 3 hrs needs the voice preservation watch , but upto 3 hours, antha preservation watch vendAm :-! .

Spoken like a true dyed-in-the-wool rasika whose comment on the last week of December will be, "why do these people sing so many concerts? Can't they see what it is doing to their voice"? :-)

Especially Rajesh--who has always encouraged me to come early to the season :)
