Nagayya's film on Tyagayya:1946

Post by Sivaramakrishnan »

Most forumites might be already knowing about the movie 'Tyagayya' produced in 1946 by Nagayya who also directed it and acted as saint composer Tyagaraja.
(But to me it has been a recent discovery)
The celebrated Nagayya has also rendered the numerous songs in his sweet voice with authentic pronunciation of Telugu words.
I felt that Nagayya has sung the songs exactly the way the saint composer would have sung it!
I have been listening to it very frequently. What a fine rendering!
The agony of the bard following disappearance of the Lord's idols has been touchingly depicted by Nagayya.

The film is in available in youtube.
Thanks to those who have revived the print and audio.

Dear Sri.P.Bala & Sivaramakrishnan,
One of my most EXCITING MOMENTS occured in 1966 (for my first visit since arriving in US in 1959)when I happened to be in the same plane going to Delhi a few seats from him & Sri. Nagayya had transformed into Thyagabrahmam in that move like M.S. had become Meera! I wanted to fall at his feet when he got down in the tarmac itself at Hyderabad but the Airline personnel kindly let me go to the terminal to do so!Those were the days when such things could happen! Thanks for letting us know about the utube version & in my opinion EVERY RASIKA should see it......Regs, VKV :ymapplause: :-@

The you tube version of Thyagayya film referred above is in Telugu language. I distinctly remember watching live in theaters a Tamil version ( perhaps dubbed into Tami ) of the movie in Tiruchi during my high school days. I wonder if a Tamil version is also available to watch now.

Yes, Sundara Rajan,

I remember seeing it in tamizh too, but the songs were in telugu, certainly.

The Tamil version I referred to is not the older one of 1937, but was perhaps a Tamil dubbed version of Nagayya's. Yes, Arasi,
of course all Thyagaraja compositions were in Telugu, as would be expected, but again I do remember a Tamil song (a dubbed one ? ) by a young girl selling flowers singing in Tamil "மல்லிகைப்பூ வாங்கிடுவீர்". This Tamil version of the movie may become available too, I hope.

Thank you Sivaramakrishnan Sir and Pratyaksham Bala sir for sharing this magnum opus on arguably one of the greatest composers bharatadesham has ever seen.

BTW, PMI was a staunch admirer of Sri Tyagaraja and his masterpieces.

This YouTube link gives just the songs from the same movie in a slightly better video-audio quality.
