Music season and Sabha Canteens

Post by thanjavooran »

When A.R. Antulay was the Chief Minister of Maharashtra in the Eighties, Arun Shourie, then Editor of The Indian Express, wrote an article entitled 'Indira's name is commerce'. The cement scandal cost Antulay his job.

The Music season is on in Chennai.

Those days Rasikas frequented the Halls to fill their soul with Music, nowadays IMHO do go to fill their stomach. Every Hall has a reputed Caterer in attendance. Crowds swell at these all-you-care-to-eat venues scrambling for seats than at Musical Domes.

What prompted me to write this is the photograph of "Periava' prominently displayed in the Advertisement banner hung outside Mylapore Fine Arts, strangely enough, on "Musiri Subramaniam Salai", Mylapore, by 'Bhaskaran Meenambikai Caterers'. The caterers' craze nowadays is to have an Ambikai suffixed to their names - ' Meenambikai',' Mookambikai, Gnambikai, Geethambikai, Swarnambikai and so on.

This may be brought to the notice Holy Pontiffs and cause a Circular issued by the Mutt declaring that the use of the photographs of Paramacharya for commercial purposes would be viewed as a "Papakaryam".

The images of Sankaracharya, or any other religious Head, do not make good promotional advertisement material, as each one of them commands the loyalty of only particular sections of the society that comprises a wide variety of ethnic, linguistic and religious groups. In a complex market like ours, no religious or political Head can influence the majority of the potential clients. In fact, they may drive away certain sections of the market!

I do believe having a name like Gnanambikai and with a picture of Paramacharya has a bigger pull in a Margazhi canteen than say a name like Iqbal Biryani with a picture of the Kaaba. Although someone evolved like TMK may have risen well above such parochial inducements.

Don't bet on it.

Every time some musician does neraval on the words thalaki vachinapadha in the kriti Nadadina matta, I get this irresistible urge to go to the nearest branch of Thalappakatti Biriyani! :D

Contrary to earlier reports, Gnanambika Catering will be running the canteen at Narada Gana Sabha. The pandal is going up and the sign outside proclaims 'Gnanambiga Catering'.

I only peeped around the corner, but, unless it is not fully built yet, or perhaps they are using space on the other side of the building, it looks as if cars win, and it is actually smalla.
