T.M.Krishna - Margazhi Maha Utsavam - 2014

T.M.Krishna gave a typical Krishna concert at the Marzhgari mahotsavam yesterday. True to his style, he kept the audience guessing not just on the songs he would sing but also the traditions he would break.
I sat at the edge of my seat as he rendered the most heartwarming performance of ‘Soundara Rajam Ashraye’ in Brindawana saranga. The entire ensemble of ‘Paka Vadhyams’ in unison with the Maestro took the Elephants for a gentle walk at the Youth hostel. The somber atmosphere lingered for several minutes after the last note was sung, only to be interrupted by Subashree. Rightly said – the entire stage was ‘One’
Ghatam and Mrindangam synched with the mellow soft voice of Krishna, so good was the orchestrating that Krisha did not allow the audience to applaud mid-way. When asked he said ‘We are all accustomed to listening to music in a particular manner and we think that is normal’. He added ‘Music today is all about packaging’ and without saying it he hinted that he wants to be a part of a change.
He acknowledged that everyone on the stage had discussed this and hence have came to concert with the intent of breaking ‘The Trend’.
Is all this an act, Is this an attempt to be different or is this a genuine attempt to lead the Rasikas to a more diverse form of kutcheri experience

The SUN TV broadcast begins with T M KRISHNA concert. On 15 th decemeber 6 am to 7 am.
This is the first time Sun TV ventures to a full fledged classical music program.
And obviously I am happy it is through MMU. In the year 2000, Vijay TV started their classical journey with this. 2002 onwards, Jaya tv took over. And now the king of satellite channels SUN TV is the official channel for telecast.
My sincere thnks to all well wishers and the music fraternity, that stood strong by me to pull this year on. And special thanks to Mrs Radhika , RADAAN tv who is the main reason for this show to be on SUN TV.
I think there is SUN TV even in Antartica. So possibly it is truly reaching the whole world.

Watched the opener of the utsavam today.

Due to the one hour time frame in the telecast, i missed elephants gently walking to soundara rAjam

What I heard was typical TMK of today. Caressing instrument sounds surrounding him (or, coming to him from the straight line). Leisurely treatment of all items--the viruttam merging into it all. In other concerts, a viruttam is like a pace changer and 'listen to these words!' feature. Krishna's meditative mode gave faintly different hues to the picture he tried to paint.

Back to the straight egality line arrangement of seating: I noticed two disadvantages about it. 1: to interact with the accompanists when his eyes were open, TMK has to turn his face toward them both ways, and it's not easy this way. A closer proximity makes it easier (and the angle affords better view).
2: the instrumentalists naturally have to look at him more to follow him, look for cues, and if it's a long concert, they may get a crick in the neck doing this! Artistes who have different parts to play in a concert and need feedback from the 'equal' main artiste, are they disadvantaged this way? I don't know.

I went to his concert yesterday at Bharat Kalachar with no expectation whatsoever and the hall was almost full.
He was tentative right from the beginning and really never took off.I can understand his desire to sing differently ,but all along he was fumbling and his raga elaboration was also found wanting.He should at least plan what he desires to present and do justice to his format.All in all a great disappointment.I have heard him sing earlier and he is capable of transposing the rasika to a different plane.
May be that my personal experience was such...Such a great talent drifting .

I think there was an earlier clarification - there's only one mArgazhi mahA utsavam.....the one being broadcast on Jaya TV is probably just mArgazhi utsavam, perhaps?
