நீதி கட்சித்தலைவருள் ஒருவரான தியாகராச செட்டியார் பெயர் தாங்கிய தி.நகரில் பிரம்ம கான சபை பிரமிப்பிலிருந்து மீளாதிருந்த நமக்கு அடுத்த ஆச்சர்யம் பாரத் கலாச்சாரில் காத்திருந்தது ,தன்னிகரில்லா தலைவரின் கச்சேரி சரியாக 6 மணிக்கு துவங்க நாம் கேட்க ஆயத்தமானோம் .வெள்ளை கூட்டணியில் புது உறுப்பினராய் அனிருத்தும் பாலாஜியும் சேர வினு சந்தன வண்ணத்தில் வந்திருந்தார் , பின்புலத்தில் சோழர் கட்டிட வேலைப்பாட்டில் கோயில் அமைந்திருந்தது என்ன கோவில் எனத்தெரியவில்லை , தெரிந்தவர் கூறவும் , கோயில் பின்புலம் என்பதால் முழுக்கச்சேரியும் பக்தி ரசம் சொட்ட சொட்ட தலைவர் பாடினார் ,
1) வர்ணத்தில் தரங்கம்பாடி பஞ்சநாத அய்யரின் நீ வண்டி தைவமு நம்மை நீலாம்பரியில் தாலாட்டியது கச்சேரி இடையிலும் முடிவிலும் பாடப்படும் நீலாம்பரியை முதலில் களம் இறக்கி இன்று முற்றிலும் மாறுபட்ட கச்சேரி என அவைக்கு உரைத்தார் நம் உன்னதர் ,நீலாம்பரி நமக்கு நிர்மலத்தைத் தந்தது.
2) அடுத்து சித்ரரஞ்சனியில் நாததனுமானிசம் சங்கரம் தியாகராசர் கிருதி நம்மை கவர்ந்தது , சங்கரணை துதித்து சாம வேதத்தை புகழ்ந்து சப்த்ஸ்வரத்தை உயர்த்திய தியாகராசர் பாடல் நம்மை தியாகராய நகரிலிருந்து தேவலோகத்திற்கு இட்டுச்சென்றது.
3) அடுத்து ஆலாபனையை நாம் எதிர்பார்க்க தலைவர் சியாமா சாஸ்திரியின் ஹிமகிரி குமாரி காஞ்சி காமாட்சி எனும் காஞ்சி நாயகி அருள் பெறவல்ல பாடலை தலைவர் தோடியில் பாட , தோடி நம்மை நாடி வந்து அம்மன் அருள் தந்தது.
4) அடுத்த சஹானா ஆலாபனை நீலம்பரி கேட்டு சுகித்திருந்த நம் செவிகளில் மேலும் தேன்மாரி பொழிந்தார் தலைவர் , அவனீஸ்வரம் வினு சுகமாய் சஹானாவை வாசிக்க மேலும் சுவை கூடியது இதுவரை நாம் கேட்டிராத தியாகராசரின் ஹேமவதி ரதி தலைவர் பாட சஹானாவை சளைக்காமல் ருசித்து மகிழ்ந்தோம்
5) கச்சேரி துவங்கி ஐந்தாவது பாடலாகியும் பாபநாசம் சிவன் வராமலிருப்பாரா தாயே ஏழைப்பால் தயைசெய்யவே பைரவியில் தலைவர் பாட அவரின் ரசிகர்கள் பால் தாய் தயை புரிந்தாள் நாம் அகமகிழ்ந்து கேட்டோம் . சிவன் பாடல்களென்றால் தலைவருக்கு தனி உற்சாகம்தான்.
6) அடுத்து கன்னடா ஆலாபனை , மீண்டும் ஒரு சுகராகம் அதி அற்புத்தமாய் கன்னடா அவையெங்கும் பாய வினுவின் வயலின் அதை அப்படியே வாசித்து காட்ட பரம சுகம் தந்தது கன்னட சிவனுக்குப்பின் தலைவர் நேசிக்கும் சுவாதி திருநாளின் கலயாமி ஹிருதி நந்தா தலைவர் பாட திருவனந்தபுரத்தாரும் அனிருத்தும் மேலும் அணி சேர்த்தனர் கலையாமி கன்னட ராகத்தில் அவையெங்கும் கரைபுரண்டோடியது
7) கன்னட ராகத்தை தொடர்ந்து சுத்த கர்னாடக ராகமான மத்யமாவதி ஆலாபனை தலைவர் பாட மகிழ்ந்து கேட்டோம் நாம் ஆடும் மயிலாய் உருவெடுத்து விருத்தம் பாடி கற்பகமே கண்பாராய் தலைவர் பாடி பன்முறை கேட்ட நாம் கச்சேரியின் பிரதான ராகமாக மத்யமாவதி எடுத்துப்பாடியதில் எல்லையில்லா இன்பம் கொண்டோம் , மீண்டும் சியாமாசாஸ்திரி , மீண்டும் அம்மன் பாடல் , அதிலும் மீண்டும் காமாட்சி , பாலிஞ்சு காமாட்சி கிருதி சாஸ்திரி காமாட்சி அம்மனிடம் தன்னை காக்குமாறு மன்றாடி உருகி எழுதிய பாடலை தலைவர் உருகி உருகி பாட நாம் உருக்கத்துடன் கேட்டு மகிழ்ந்தோம்.தனியில் திருவனந்தபுரம் பாலாஜியும் அனிருத்தும் அசத்தினார்கள் பொறமையில்லாத அவர்களின் போட்டி நமக்கு பெரும் விருந்தாய் அமைந்தது.
8) அடுத்து தண்டபாணி தேசிகரின் அடியேனை காத்தருள்வாய் காம்போதி ராகத்தில் தலைவர் பாடினார் நாம் பக்தியில் ஆனந்த நடனம் ஆடினோம் , தலைவர் வாயிலாய் ஆலவாய் இறைவனின் அன்பிற்கிணிய அங்கயர்கன்னி நம்மை ஆசிர்வதித்து மகிழ்ந்தாள்.
9) ஆச்சர்யம் காத்திருக்கும் கச்சேரி என்று சொன்னேனல்லவா அதை மெய்ப்பிக்கும் வித்த்தில் தலைவர் லலிதா ராக ஆலாபனை துவக்கினார் இந்த ஆண்டு இதுவரை பாடிய இரண்டு ராதாப வும் மிகவும் அரிதாய் பாடப்படுவன அதன் வரிசையில் லலிதா ராதாப அர்ங்கேறியது 8 நிமிட தலைவரின் அரிய ஆலாபனையை உள் வாங்கி 6 நிமிடம் வயலினில் வாசித்தளித்தார் வினு அடுத்த 10 நிமிடம் தானம் தாண்டவமாடியது தலைவர் உதடுகளில் உத்வேகம் கொண்டோம் நாம் , தஞ்சை பொன்னையா பிள்ளையின் மாயா தீத ஸ்வரூபிணி என மீண்டுமோர் அம்மன் பாடல் பல்லவியில் தலைவர் பாட பாட நாம் உணர்வு பொங்கிடக் கேட்டோம் , அடுத்த ஆச்சர்யம் ராகமாலிகையில் காத்திருந்தது பிரம்ம கான சபையில் மூன்று ராகங்கள் இடம் பெற இங்கோ 5 ராகங்கள் ராக மாலிகையாக நம்மை வலம் வந்தது , தலைவரின் முத்திரை பதித்த பேகடா , ஆபேரி , அமீர் கல்யாணி , நாட்டுக்குறிச்சி , பெஹாக் என அடுத்தது அடுத்து தலைவர் பட மகிழ்ச்சியின் உச்சியை அடைந்தோம் ஒவ்வோர் ராகத்தையும் வெறும் 1.30 திமிடங்களில் ராகம் பாடி வயலின் இசைத்து பாடல் பாடி ராகத்தை முழுவதுமாய் தந்தார் தலைவர் அது தான் நம் தலைவர் அதுவும் அமீர் கல்யாணி அமர்களம் , மொத்தத்தில் லலிதா ராகம் தானம் பல்லவி கச்சேரியின் கதாநாயகனாயிற்று தலைவர் ஓர் வற்றாத இசை ஊற்று.
10) ஆண்டாளின் ஒருத்திமகனாய் பிறந்து எனும் கண்ணபிரான் புகழ் பாடும் பாடலை தலைவரின் நிரந்திர செல்லப்பிள்ளை பெஹாக்கில் பாட நாம் கரைந்து போனோம்
11) ஸ்ரீமத் பாகவத சிருத்வா குணா புவன சுந்தரா சுலோகம் தலைவர் பாட பயபக்தியோடு கேட்டோம்
12) மேடையில் மலையாள தேசத்திலிருந்து இருவர் இருந்ததால் மீண்டும் நம்மிடையே சுவாதி திருநாள் வந்தார் கோபால பக்திம் தேகி மூலம் பாக்யஸ்ரீ ராகத்தில் தலைவர் கசிந்துருகி பாட நாம் இசையில் பக்தியில் மூழ்கினோம்.
13) அடுத்து தலைவரின் சமீபத்திய செல்லப்பிள்ளை கமாஸ் அகில சராசரா பாடி திருவளர் மயிலையை இவ்வாண்டு சென்னையில் மூன்றாவது முறையாக பாடினார் மூவாயிரம் முறை அவர் பாடினாலும் நாம் சலிக்காமல் கேட்கவல்ல கமாஸ் அவையெங்கம் கமகமத்தது.இதுவரை நான் கண்ட தலைவரின் மூன்று கச்சேரிகளில் கமாஸ் பெஹாக் இரண்டும் இரு முறை அரங்கேறியுள்ளது சனவரி 1 அன்று தெரியும் தலைவர் துக்கடா தோழன் பெஹாக்கா அல்லது கமாஸா என்று.
14) சிந்துபைரவி இல்லாமல் தலைவர் கச்சேரியா விற்பெரு விழவும் கஞ்சனும் மல்லும் வேழமும் பாகனும் வீழ, திருவல்லிக்கேணி தலத்தின் பெருமையை பறைசாற்றும் மூன்றாம் திருமொழி தலைவர் பாட கபாலி தெய்வத்தை தொழுத நாம் இப்போது பார்த்தசாரதியை பக்தியுடன் தொழுதோம்.
15) சங்கராபரணத்தில் காதி மோதி வாதாதிடும் அருணகிரிநாதர் திருப்புகழ் தலைவர் பாட அவர் புகழ் பாடும் நாம் முருகப்பெருமான் தரிசனமும் கண்டோம்.
16) மங்களம் பாடி முடித்தபோது மணி 9.30 . 210 நிமிடங்கள் முடிந்தது அப்போதுதான் நாமுணர்ந்தோம்.

அம்மன் திருமால் சிவன் கண்ணன் முருகன் என்று பக்தி பெருவிழாவாய் அமைந்தது கச்சேரி , வைணவர்களுக்கும் சைவர்களுக்கு பார்த்து பார்த்து பாடும் வல்லமை இவரையல்லால் யாரிடம் உண்டு அய்யப்பனை சரணம் விளிக்கும்போது சைவ வைணவ ஐக்கியமே என்று நான் விளிப்பதுண்டு , இன்று மேடையில் சைவ வைணவ ஐக்கியத்தை பாடக்கண்டேன் அதற்கு என்ன பாக்கியம் செய்தேன் .

நித்தியானந்தம் தரும் நீலாம்பரி !
சித்தம் குளிர சித்ர்ரஞ்சனி!
தோகை விரித்தாடிய தோடி!
சர்வசுகம் தரும் சஹானா!
பைந்தமிழ் கொஞ்சும் பைரவி!
உன்னதக் கன்னடா !
மனம்குளிர மத்யமாவதி!
லயிக்கச் செய்த லலிதா !
பேரானந்த பெஹாக் !

சாதாரண மனிதர்களுக்கு சஞ்சயின் இந்த இசை போதும் ஆனால் எங்களைப்போன்ற சஞ்சய் பித்தர்களுக்கு போதாது பேராசையோடு (தலைவர் இசையை பெரும் ஆசை ) திருமலைப்பிள்ளை சாலையிலிருந்து கோபதி நாரயனசுவாமி செட்டி சாலையை நோக்கி பயணிப்போம் , என்னுடன் வாரீர் தலைவர் புகழ் பாடுவோம் ! சதானந்த கச்சேரி கேட்டு மகிழ்வோம் !

Thanks for bringing this. Knowing your ability in translating, I thought one followed.
Before anyone complains, this is a toughie to translate. Aravinth Mudaliar's zeal and unique style of writing makes it difficult.

It's Sanjay's forte, displaying the beauty of unknown songs and bringing their impact to us. He has been quite an influence among musicians (mostly the younger ones) in their choosing to sing the songs he has discovered. Says something about the merit of the compositions, and what Sanjay has brought to them by his expositions...


I haven't missed any of Sanjay's concerts at BKalachar all these years. This year, my loss. Kala Rasana concerts are special too. Another miss.

Tough to translate it may very well be, but I think it's rude to post something in tamizh without a translation in this thread - unless there is a subtle message being sent that unless one reads tamizh one has no business reading these so-called open threads.....

I am sorry if it sounds rude. I confess that I was eager to share at least with the Tamizh readers. I would attempt to translate, but I do not have the heart as I cannot get the flair of it in English try as I might.
(I have seen other posts in Tamizh in this forum earlier and it might have made me feel it is all right to post this).

Gist of the review:
We sharpened our ears as at 6PM the concert of our icon* nonpareil commenced. With the backdrop of a temple, our icon gave a devotional fare in the company of Vinu, Balaji and Aniridh.
1. The first item was a varnam in Nilambari, a raga handled later in the order normally, an item of Tarangambadi ‘nIvaNTi deivamu’. He sang a lullaby to us hinting by the choice of raga a new orientation to today’s concert as it were. Nilambari gave us nirmala.
2. Next item was ‘nAda tanumainiSam’ of T in Chitharanjani. It took us from T Nagar to Devaloka with the song that prayed to Siva, praised Samaveda and exalted saptaswara.
3. As we expected an alapana, SS kriti ‘himagiri Kumari Kanchi Kamakshi’ in Todi caressed us fondly and showered the grace of Ambal.
4. Sahana alapana came along with a lovely return from Vinu. The ears soothed by Nilambari were now soaked in honey. We enjoyed with relish a rare kriti of T ‘Hemavati Rati’.
5. As we wondered how Sivan was yet to appear though fifth song was due, he sang ‘thAyE EzhaippAl dayai seivAyE’ in Bhairavi and his rasikas felt blessed and we were thrilled. Our icon has a penchant for Sivan compositions.
6. Next was alapana of Kannada, a sukha ragam. As Kannada wafted along the hall and Vinu followed up like a carbon copy, our icon chose the kriti of Swati Tirunal, close to his heart after Sivan, ‘Kalayami hridi Nanda’. The percussionists embellished it and the kannada overflowed the banks.
7. Following Kannada, it was Madhyamavati. Alapana in Madhyamavati as a main raga pleased us. Another kriti of SS on Kamakshi Amman ‘Palintsu Kamakshi’ was chosen. SS has composed in a way to melt the heart, Sanjay sang it so and our hearts too melted. Balaji and Anirudh followed up with a fitting tani, in healthy competition, which provided a feast to our ears.
8. Next he sang Dandapani Desikar’s ‘Adiyenai Kattharulvay’ in Kambodhi. We danced in devotion. Angayarkanni, the beloved concort of Siva, was pleased to grace us through the song.
9. He began Lalitha raga alapana next. The RTP this year have been in rare ragas and in that line this was also rare. Vinu internalized the alapanaa of 8 minutes and reproduced it for 6 minutes. Next the tanam rollicked in the lips of our icon and we became excited. As our icon sang again and again Ponnaiya Pillai’s ‘Mayathitha Swaroopini’, another line in praise of Ambal, we listened in emotional exuberance. Five ragas came in procession in ragamalika. He sang Begada, Aberi, Hamir Kalyani, Nattai kurinji and Behag in succession with his royal stamp, compressing the beauty of the ragas each in a minute and a half, including raga, swara and violin return. That is our icon. That too, Hamir Kalyani was a gem. On the whole Lalitha RTP was piece de resistance. Our icon is an inexhaustible music spring.
10. As he sang his eternal pet, behag, in ‘Orutthi makanay’ of Andal in praise of Kanna, we thawed.
11. As he sang ‘Srutva guna bhuvana sundara’ from Bhagavatam, we listened in devotion.
12. As there were two persons from Malayalam, he sang another Swati Tirunal piece, ‘Gopala Bhaktim Dehi’ in Bagesri passionately and we got soaked in bhakti.
13. He next sang his recent pet, Kamas, ‘Akila charachara’ for the third time in Chennai. Even if he sings for 3000 times, Kamas is worth listening to without feeling bored. The flavour of Kamas pervaded the hall. We have heard his pets (Behag and Kamas) twice this season and on Jan 1 we will know which of the two is his real pet in thukkadas.
14. Can there be a concert of our icon without Sindhubhairavi? He sang ‘Virpaka vizhavum’ in praise of Parthasarathi of Thiruvallikkeni. Having paid our obeisance to Kapali, we now did so to Parthasarathi.
15. He sang a thiruppugazh ‘Kadi modi vadadidum’ in Sankarabharanam. We, who adore him, got a darsan of Muruga also.
16. When mangalam was completed it was 9.30PM. 210 minutes had elapsed which we realized just then.
For ordinary rasikas this concert would do, but for Sanjay fans, it is not enough. We now look forward to the next concert.

A personal note to RShankar--we need to be a little more civil in this forum-an enthusiastic report--a gushing admirer of Sanjay's music posts an exhilarating review--this DOES not deserve a "rude"inference!!

I generally do not comment on the tenor of forumites' comments even if I do not agree with them. I am sorry I made an exception!!!

thalaivar also means leader. That suits the man. Again, LBR...

Yes and no
If you appreciate Sivaji Ganesan's films (tamizh culture has room for melodrama, and Sivaji's are its finest exmples), this review is a powerful expression of that genre. Here at the forum, we like to be both rasikAs with no special preferences, as if only the quality of music is our concern (fair enough), and also can't help expressing our preferences (fair again)!

Though Chellappa is not such a young and ardent fan as the reviewer, he saw the relevance in posting it here. He also took the trouble of translating it. However, he could not avoid the expressions inherent in tamizh which were voiced in the florid language by a young and adoring fan
