Short RTP again. Though, I can't recall an elaborate RTP from him or his school. Even DKP/DKJ's RTPs I have heard in cassettes/recordings are 15 - 25 min affairs.

Vasanthavarali was sung as a Janya of natabhairavi or shadvidhamargini?

DKP a.k.a. Pallavi Pattammal == short Pallavis? Sounds like an oxymoron. To be honest, I haven't heard too many concerts by the legend to comment.

I don't think we should go by the recordings available alone. For DKP the RTPs in Vachaspathi and Jaganmohini and Dhanyasi which are available in commercial recordings are relatively short ones. But that's not the only yardstick. Nithyasree regularly sings pallavis for about 45 minutes with a garland of ragamalika swaras.

Quite surprised regarding the comments reg the pallavis of DKP. She occupied the numero uno in the field of pallavi in her days. There is one commercial recording of Jaganmohini RTP (IIRC, AVM) which is for one full hour. and that is the text book for any RTP- what all things you can do within the framework. BOth DKP and DKJ excel in that accompanied by PMI. In many concerts she has rendered elaborate RTPs in Thodi, Vachaspathi, Bhairavi etc. 45 mts to 1 hour. I rate her Vachaspathi RTP as one of the best , the other being that of Alathur. Some RTPs are small like Dhanyasi etc. There are other RTPs like Madhyamavathi, Harikambodi, Bhairavi, Kambodi, Manirang etc. These concerts are under circulation. For some reasons, I have not heard very elaborate pallvis from DKJ.

@CRama - There is one very elaborate RTP by DKJ in Shankarabharanam that I remember listening to apart from a few others. It is quite surprising that an artiste of Vijay Sivas calibre sings 15 and 20 minute RTP. I was at his academy concert and it is so far the concert of the season for me. He did not sing an RTP there but instead sang a very elaborate Kambodi followed by Kaanakankoti. What a treat that concert was. I am backlogged on reviews but listening time keeps me busy from writing. Hope to get in a few this week, especially this classic from Vijay Siva.

Please post the MA review on a separate thread. Last year attended his MA concert which was just awesome. Nice to see Varadarajan accompany him. How was the chemistry?

Lovely review....you remind me of Sri Arunacala Kavi or Sri Tulsidas
- the former, stumped at finding a simile to describe sItA said 'avaLukkavaLE jODu' (she is her only comparator) and the latter said, 'raghuvar chabi kE samAn raghuvar chabi baniyA' (the only thing that's like rAma's face is rAma's face)!
