TIRING POORVIKALYANI
Sorry if it sounds harsh to some. But it is a fact. I have attended 9 concerts in this season so far. Out of this, 5 concerts featured Poorvikalyani. Of which in two, it was the main song- Ninnuvinagamari of Syama Sastri. I heard PK from S.Aiswarya, Gayathri Venkatraghavan, Ravikiran, Unnikrishnan and Sowmya. PK is any day not a favourite of me. But I know I have to bear that. But this is too disturbing. Many years, Kalyani and Panthuvarali were the easy pick of musicians from prati madhyamam group. Why artistes do not choose other PM ragas like Sihendramadhyamam, Vachaspathi, Hemavathi, Hamsanandi and many other PM ragas.

Re: POORVIKALYANI MENACE
You left out Sanmukhapriya - which is a reasonable favorite many a time for RTP. No complaints about PoorviKalyani though - it is not often it is chosen as a main or submain.

Re: POORVIKALYANI MENACE
CRama,
It's one of my favorite rAgAs too, and as g_g says, it's not sung that much in concerts. Still, I know exactly how you feel. Even favorite rAgams can get to be tiring if they are heard in succession when you take in concerts in a row during the season (happens in Cleveland too
).
And, it's just the beginning of the season!
Yet, my pUrvi kalyANi--she may be tiring, but menacing?

Oh poor Poorvikalyani
What a sorry state.
You're like an yesteryear star
With long lost charm.
What is the use of a pretty name
Oriental Beauty that you are.
Don't take the plea of Shyamashastri literally -
ninnuvinaga mari dikkevarunnAru nikhilalOkajanani nannu brOcuTaku
I suggest you take a long sabbatical. Until CRama and other rasikas send for you!

Agree with CRama... Almost every other concert has purvikalyani or pantuvarali as sub-main... There are plenty of choices, but don't know why it is this way... I have started disliking these two ragas now.. I was very happy to hear vedavalli's vacahspati on saturday for carnatica..

gardabha gana. Reg Shanumugapriya for RTP, what you told was correct some years back when Shanmugapriya was the obvious choice of ragam for RTP. But now. RTP is sung in any ragam from Kosalam to Desh and Tilang. So the dependence on Shanmugapriya has come down. This ragam is my favourite and I would like Shanmugapriya to be taken as a main or sub main.

CRama - your mentioning of SP brings back memories from early 80s. My dad and I were attending Nedunuri-LGJ concert at Seshadripuram Rama Navami series - when we left after the tani to catch the bus home (last bus). At the bus stand, we heard Nedunuri start on Shanmukhapriya which ended up being an RTP. My dad and I (i didn't know much about SP or RTP then) - ran back and walked home past 11 PM after the concert. Bangalore was safer those days.... Reminded of this especially with recent news about Nedunuri Sir and Shanmukhapriya. Nedunuri, RKS etc have sung RTP in this raga many times.

TVS/MMI also sing Vijayambike a lot - TVS does this especially during Navarathri concerts

REg Shanmugapriya RTP, once I recorded ten concerts of Nedunuri. Five or six had Shanmugapirya RTP. Same with Santhanam also.

Sri Nedunuri has reveled in ragas such as Shanmugapriya, Natakurinji, Karaharapriya, madhyamavathi, Poorvikalyani, Thodi and Kambhoji. Several concerts he has sung them elaborately and each one is so special and spellbinding. I guess it all depends on who sings and how well our ears are trained to enjoy these lovely ragas
Ever charming musician, we have lost him !!

"It all depends on who sings it and how."
Absolutely.
Back to the jAmbavAn. In the eighties. A coffee break in the concert in a small concert in North America. He walks into the little kitchen of the community hall...
"Coffee for you?"
As he was sipping the beverage, I asked him, to make sure we will get a biggie gift (hall is small).
" What will you sing for RTP? We are waiting for one!"
"May I sing shaNmukha priyA?"
"Yes, please!"
And what a shanmukhapriya it was
Absolutely.

Re: TIRING POORVIKALYANI
Believe me. There is a proof that all musicians are visiting our forum in spite of their busy schedule. Since my lamenting about poorvikalyani, I have not heard PK in any of the concerts I attended. (I attend 3-5 concerts a day)
