2014 wrap-up
Dear rasikas,
I want to thank the Almighty and all the wonderful musicians who have given us food for the soul as well as food for thought this year.
I would mention my 3 highlights:
1. Ramakrishnan Murthy HamirKalyani - with the wonderful Charumathi Raghuraman at Seshadripuram
2. Abhishek Shahana RTP at Unnati
3. Anantha R Krishnan accompaniment on many occasions.
I want to mention these 3 but I have to thank many other fantastic artistes and their music I have heard all year long.
God bless and best wishes to all in 2015!
Please, I welcome your special mentions, too.

Who is Anantha R Krishnan ? The violonist or the Mridangist. I guess there are 2 who share the same name.

Is Nick trying to do Sociological Research? Why was he hanging around the Academy the afternoon of Aruna Sayeeram's concert? Or is he a secret admirer of abhangs?

Re: 2014 wrap-up
Actual conversation with an auto driver as I took one to go to Raga Sudha Hall after Aruna Sayeeram's concert:
It was drizzling, there was a traffic jam as people were trying to exit from the Academy in their cars and two cars were parked by the side of the road adding to the mess.
Auto driver: What is happening here for there to be such a crowd?
Me: A music concert by a very popular artist just ended. There was a good crowd.... pey koottam.
Auto driver: Make up your mind, it is either a good crowd or crowd of peys.
Me: A large crowd of peys.
Auto driver: As far as we men are concerned, women are the peys. Did you have a large number of women?
Me: I suppose so.
Auto driver: Dogs get their energy by barking; if they don't bark, they just lie down and sleep. Women seem to be the same way. They never get tired from talking but seem to build up energy by chattering away.

No, he was wandering around the halls, looking like someone who somehow wanted to obtain a ticket.Rsachi wrote:You caught him in the nick. He must have been there for the tuck.

Re: 2014 wrap-up
Even machines know what to do and what not to do. A friend went to Arkay Convention Center. Charumathi Raghuraman was playing the violin, Hubby Anantha R Krishnan was playing the mridangam. My friend turned on his trusty recorder. When he came home, there was 18 seconds of sound and the recorder had turned itself off. However, my friend was able to record the program that followed. So, it was not that the battery had died.
What conclusion do we draw from this?

Harimau,
i always suspected it peys to converse with the autodrivers. They have a way of extracting wisdom from a mish mash of street fight, TV serial and Dina Thanthi.

Any suggestion that I was hankering after habhangs or desiring a bhajan is a terrible slur! I am not sure I dare show my face there again, now that I know people are saying this sort of thing about me. Is it my fault if I forgot to check the schedule before wandering over there for the canteen life? As it happens, it was a bad time for socialising, because, all the people I knew in the queue for entrance to the concert suddenly pretended that they were only there to research the SK portraits. But... I have their names...

Re: 2014 wrap-up
Leaving aside my perennial favorites...
Elder concert off the season: Madurai G S Mani. (Arkay)
New-to-me of the season: K Dharini
Mridangist of the year: T K Ramakrishnan.
I knew mr Ramakrishnan as a keen Rasika, to be seen in the audience of many, many concerts. Here had once casually mentioned that he played mridangam and then hurried on to the next topic of conversation. I was surprised to see him on the stage at RS Hall, with Neela Ramgopal and delighted by his style.

Sir, as I live in a country where the word "fall" is used only in politics, stock markets and geriatric accidents, I may not fully understand your expression.
Please elucidate.
Thanks!

As Fall Wraps up, Winter comes and As Winter comes spring is not far off. Do we go through this wrap up in Carnatic music too.

Aren't we blessed with the lovely sharadRtu and Margashirsha - as Bhagavan Krishna says it is the holiest of months.
We have the cool weather, the lovely Music Season, the season of oranges, peas, apples...year-end bonus, shopping festival, holidays..
All in all a season of great celebration unmatched by any other!
So calling it "fall" around here seems a bit inappropriate

Nick, on the other hand, only attends the concerts of artists favored by Naada Inbam at other venues.
I don't believe Aruna Sairam has performed at Raga Sudha Hall in the last 10 years under the banner of any Sabha.

Re: 2014 wrap-up
I do tend to follow artists who appear at Ragasudha Hall, although it seems to increasingly host banners others than Naada Inbam. I do not follow all the artists who appear there, nor do I not follow all the artists who do not appear there.
What can all this mean? I don't know.
I suspect that there may be some sort of numerological significance to the numbering of the urinals at the Music Academy. Some form of divination may be possible. The attempt to discover it will have to wait until next year, as I rarely attend dance, whatever venues the dancers may be associated with.

A senior music student training under a great guru went to the tup-tup artist's concert.
After the concert, the student said, "I have got anything/everything that could possibly be gotten out of this concert. I don't need to listen to him for the next 10 years."

Re: 2014 wrap-up
After Abu Sheik's concert for Bharath Sangeeth Utsav, someone asked a well-known music guru what he thought of the concert.
The gentleman said, "Hmmmpff", paused for several seconds to decide what he wanted to say, and then continued, "That young woman Amritha Murali sang extremely well" and resumed his stately walk out the door.

Don't make assumptions. This is a gentleman who has produced star students before Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana was born or Skype was developed.tiruppugazh wrote:"Well known music guru" usually means Skype successful Cleveland recognised guru
Abu Sheik cannot be defended by such innuendoes.

A star student before the birth of Cleveland Aradhana??? So the student was already a star in 1978??
