Yesterday Shruti, the carnatic channel of Worldspace played a full lenght concert of Smt Kiranavali Vidyashankar held as a part of Thyagaraja Aradhanain Cleveland in April 2006. The accompanists were CS Anuroop on the Vioin and Tiruvaroor Vaidyanathan on th Mridangam.
The items were
Inta parAka??- Mayamalavagowlai-AnaiAyya brothers (Swarams)
Sarasa SAma DAna - KApi NArAyaNi- T
Kaa Vaa Vaa KandA Vaa- VarAli- PS (Alapana, Swarams)
Sri MAtrubhUtam- KannadA- MD
Nadachi Nadachi- Kharaharapriya- Thyagaraja- (A,N,S,T)
This was the first time I was listening to her . Well aware of her glorious pedigree, I had high expectations and was well... not disappointed. She seems to have a rather low bass voice which is quite refreshing change from shrill sky high pitches which one gets to hear these days. Her execution was neat , presentation restrained without an overdose of brighas and a good grip over laya.
The varali alapana was well structured and some intersting swara patterns thrown in the end.
The k'priya alapana had all the usual prayogas and sancharas. A power failure towards the end meant that I missed out on the neraval, swaras and the tani.
This concert will be repeated on Wednesday 9:00PM so those who have Worldspace connections may not want to miss it. A concert definately worth a hear.
