Lalitha & Nandini are excellent - don't miss them!
I heard them for the first time here in London, and got completely hooked. Their bowing is top-class, the L.Shankar/L.Subramaniam pedigree shows.

Now that we have some idea of the performances being scheduled, could I ask for some information on the venues themselves?
Which halls in Chennai have the best audio quality? Which are best avoided? What other aspects of the halls are noteworthy (seats, canteen, location, etc)?
Please let us know your favourites.

In response to gn.sn42's query, we had an interesting discussion on sangeetham.com before season 05...anyway, it is always a pleasure to talk about concert venues so here goes:
The Academy is clearly seeing some changes under the new management - although whether they are all for the better is debatable. One significant improvement is the loos on the first floor with the ground floor washrooms being renovated as well. I am not sure whether the "Corner Cafe", serving pizzas and capuccinos is a great idea though...I hope Arusuvai/Mt Mani etc. are not edged out by these new-fangled upstarts. The audio system is usually good and one can expect artistes to give their best but the atrociouosly cramped balcony seats (which are the only ones I can afford) and horribly crowded lobbies detract substantially from the concert experience ...the parking arrangement at St. Ebba's is welcome but a nightmare during the rains as I discovered when my car got hopelessly stuck in the slush. However, since I usually prefer public transport, this is not a deal-breaker for me..
Narada Gana Sabha is a little dilapidated but generally OK with the highlight being Jayaraman's superb gastronomic delights to which no Kutcheri can hold a candle! Unfortunately my visits to this sabha are mostly for the food since music programmes are usually given the 4.30 slot....you need to park on the by lanes off TTK road which is usually not a problem
Krishna Gana Sabha's ticket prices tend to rise sharply every season (I believe it is one of the most expensie venues now) but otherwise this is one of the best sabas overall - tastefully renovated with cane chairs and a top of the line Bose audio system. Once again, dance performances dominate the evenings but the morning concerts are worth a visit. No catering other than coffee and some snacks...parking can be dicey when top artists are performing
The YGP Hall at PSBB T Nagar (Bharath Kalachar) is another favourite of mine. The arrangements are temporary but effective and the open air experience is a charming one. Concerts are happily of 3 hours + duration. Parking is plentiful and YGP mami's saucy comments are always a delight...connoisseurs of food will be disappointed though - your choice is limited to coffee/2-3 items and Java Green's incongruously located outlet...
The Mylapore Fine Arts Club should really do something about their auditorium...or at least the sound system, which is a total disgrace...ditto for the loos. On the other hand, concerts start at 6 and the discerning Mylapore mamas and mamis ensure that artistes are at their no-nonsense best. Some of my best concerts have been at this venue - TNS, in particular, is known for his 4 hour concerts here - I've been to each one of his concerts at this venue in the last 5 years and they've all been among the top 2-3 concerts of the season. I think Meenakshi was the caterer last time and remember unsuccessfully jostling for their delicious meals on New Year's day 2006. Leave your vehicle at home.
Indian Fine Arts is a curiously shaped auditorium and the sound system is known to start humming along with (although not to the tune of) the performer! 7.30 starts limit concert duration. The loos are just about tolerable and so is the food....but tickets are cheap, easily available and I find the overall experience at this venue relatively hassle free, especially since it is very close to my house. Parking is usually not a problem on Prakasam Street although the venue itself can only accommodate a few vehicles.
Vani Mahal suffers from a problem of excesses on both the audio and airconditioning fronts and these mar an otherwise comfortable auditorium. This is one hall where it is worth buying expensive front row tickets just to avoid the fury of the rear speakers....also remember to bring a shawl or a pullover. Meenakshi, which was featured last year dished out some memorable Pesarattus. Concerts start at 6.30 allowing for unhurried renditions. Parking is available but limited and there is no place to park outside the venue.
Parthasarathy Sabha's plastic chairs are, quite literally, a pain in the backside...cheap-ticket holders in the back rows will get have to remain content with the audio part of the performance. Loos should be used only in an emergency. Arusuvai usually puts up his show at this venue and draws a full house but the quality, like Tendulkar's batting, is not as dependable any more. The audio is a simple, temporary arrangement but the output is surprisingly good...
Getting squeezed into one of Rani Seethai Halls 's (Kalarasana) side/back-row seats is not a pleasant experience and parts of the audi stink but the hall is otherwise a good one. Lots of parking space, a decent sound system and a sensible 6.15 PM start. Catering is basic but I would recommend "Mr and Mrs. Idli Sambar" at the petrol pump next door for fingerlickin' dosas and paranthas...
Mudhra at Freedom Hall start their concerts at 6 and are known for the occasional 4 hour concert as well as 1-raga concert, both of which merit consideration. Audio is good but plastic chairs and a low stage are minor irritants...
I've probably missed out a few here - notably Rasika Ranjani sabhas which is shifting into new/renovated hall but I do hope this gives a broad overview of the main venues...

recycling the post of sangeetham, only talking about acoustics...
About the acoustics
Rani Seethai Hall is certainly the best . Everywhere the sound is uniform and people moving out will not make that much of a disturbance
RaagaSudha Hall is the second best , SVK Mama adjusting the sound even half way thru if it is little above and also not succumbing to artist preferance is welcome.
Sitting in the first floor almost in the last 2 rows in Music Academy is good , but if the hall is full,when people move out of the rows , it is a problem as the space between rows of seats creates so much of sound and disturbance.
Narada Gana sabha is some times too low on sound and always is like fish market with so many people moving in and out.Also some of them walk too fast in the pathway creating another extra pakkavadyam.
MFAC and Sastri Hall has got exceessively high traffic movement may not be the best .
Narada Gana Sabha mini hall is actually very good .But that low seating will not give you an oppurtunity of listening to fairly top performing artist.
Raja Annamalai Hall in Parrys Corner is actually good , but no fan and excessive musquitoes is a certain problem (possibly very poorly maintained, with ac being not on )
Vani Mahal is quite good , depends on where you sit if you sit in the middle towards the side , the two speakers may sometimes make you deaf.
Like the sound system of PS High System . Fairly good .But since it has got too many open doors ,I notice when the organizers sit and talk it is too disturbing.
Krishna Gana Sabha has good acoustics , but it is better to sit in the sides . In the front half towards center there is excessive sound. Nevertheless cane chairs are wonderful.
Sivagami Auditorium has a good sound system but stay away from the first few rows in the sides.
Karnataka Sangha Sabha (Nungambakkam Cultural Academy) is quite good and pleasing . Sound is fairly uniform.
Asthika Samajam in Alwarpet is quite good , but stay away from first 10 rows
Egmore , a kalyana mandapam near Dasaprakash and Asthika Samajam at Thiruvanmiyur is very average .Excessively big speakers for the aditorium.

Dear fellow rasikas,
Carnatica is happy to announce "SAMARPANAM", a mini music festival from Dec. 1 - 7, 2006 featuring senior, reputed artistes. I can safely say that most serious music lovers would treat this as a "DO NOT MISS" event!
I will post more details soon, but here are a few highlights:
* RK Srikantan with Umayalpuram Sivaraman (Dec. 4th)
* Manakkal Rangarajan with M Chandrasekaran and Vellore Ramabhadran (Dec. 1st)
* OS Tyagarajan (Dec. 2nd)
* Alleppey Venkatesan (Dec. 3rd)
* TN Krishnan & Viji Krishnan (Dec. 5th)
* Rama Ravi (Dec. 6th)
* Suguna Purushottaman & Suguna Varadachari (Duet) (Dec. 7th)
Venue will be the Tattvaloka Auditorium on Eldams Road, Alwarpet, Chennai. The festival is dedicated to 108 legendary artistes. There will also be multimedia presentations on past masters, picture exhibits, clips from vintage recordings, panel discussions on weekends and so on.... Watch this space for more details!
Mark your calendars and hope to see you all there!!
PS - A big thanks to several fellow members of this forum who turned up for our recently concluded Bharat Sangeet Utsav!

Why do sabhas always release schedules without including accompanying artiste info? Is it because they don't have it beforehand, or they don't perceive it as something important enough to mention?
For example, If I need to find out where KRM Sir or Raghu Sir are going to perform, I have no way of doing so!! Would have been nice if someone had a schedule page like they had in sangeetham, where you could browse schedules by sabha, artiste, or date.

I think the sabhas release detailed schedules too .... may be most of the notices they distribute don't have it. I have managed to collect a few of these notices with accompanists' names included and have collated most of the material at http://ramsabode.wordpress.com/concerts-in-chennai/ . I will add the remaining details tonight. BTW, with so many promising kutcheris lined up daily, I too am selecting which ones to attend in a way similar to you i.e, by seeing where stalwarts like Sri Umayalpuram Sivaraman, Sri Karaikkudi Mani, Sri Palghat Raghu etc are playing.
