Post by preyas »

Does someone have the lyrics for Vidai Meethu Pavani Vanthar. I hope I am right with the name. I believe it is on Shiva. A keerthanam. I was not sure of the composer or the ragam and talam.

This is one of the first songs in the Krishnamari (Karumari) Kuravanji which Kalakshetra puts up. I can post the lyrics in a day or two.

Suguravi,

Here you go:
pallavi:
viDai mIdu bhavani vandAn vEdapuri nAthan

The lord (nAthan) of vEdapuri [1], astride/sitting on top of (mIdu) a bull (viDai), came (vandAn) on a procession (bhavani)!

anupallavi
naDamADum Siva yOgan nAgamaNiyum bOdhan
kuDamuni paNindETTum kOdilA Siva nAthan (viDai mIdu…)

The dancing (naTamADum) [2] Siva yOgi (yOgan) [3], the wise one (bOdhan) who is adorned (aNi) with snakes (nAgam), the one who is extolled (Ettum) and worshipped (paNindu) by sage agastya (kuDamuni), the blemishless (kOdilA) Siva (Siva nAthan) (astride a bull, came on a procession).

caranam
nAdamisaikkum devA - nArImaNigaL ADa
nAraNan biramanum narkaram siram cUDa
gIta gandharvarellAm kiLarisai yAzh olikka
kavi pADi endaiyar uLLam kutUgalikka (viDai mIdu…)

(The lord of vEdapuri) who makes/creates (isaikkum) music (nAdam), as the women (nArI maNigaL) [4] dance/sway (ADa), as vishNu (nAraNan) and brahma (biramanum) raise their hands (narkaram) above their heads (siram cUDa), as all (ellAm) the musical (gIta) demi-celestials (gandharvargaL) make (olikka) sweet music (kiLarisai) from their harps (yAzh), and our masters’ (endaiyar) hearts (uLLam) become rapturous (kutUhalikka) as they sing (pADi) paens (kavi), (, astride a bull, came on a procession).

FOOTNOTES
[1] AFAIK, vEdapuri has a dakshiNAmUrti svAmi temple
[2] naDamADum can also mean one who is ambulatory
[3] the purpose of the juxtaposition is that a yOgan should be in the state of ascetic meditation, while naTamADum or naDamAdum is someone who is in a state of motion – the concept is that Siva combines the two opposite concepts – even as he is performs his cosmic dance, his mind is in a yOgic trance
[4] the women here include pArvati on his iDam (left) and gangA on his siram (head)

Nice translation, Ravi. Thanks for this.

Since this is part of Karumari Kuravanji, I am sure this is on the Lord Vedapurishwara, whose temple is about a km away from the famous Karumari amman temple in Tiruverkadu. Verkadu or Tiru-verkadu as it is known today, as well as in the times of Sambandar(7th Century) who visited and composed a Tevaram verse here, has a Sanskrit name Vedapuri. There are other Vedapuris too.

Just thinking it may be deva-narimanigal as one compound word ie the Apsaras singing, since there is no other direct address to Shiva in the song, ony descriptions of.

Rajani - thank you so much for the clarification! Makes much more sense (and how, by the incorrect addtion of a single stroke, if you will - the mAtra for A instead of 'a' [dEvA instead of the correct dEva] I got completely side tracked!).

One more question - what is the rAgam this is sung in?

Suguravi - I could not edit my previous post to incorportate the point made by Rajani - so I am re-posting the corrected meaning here:

pallavi:
viDai mIdu bhavani vandAn vEdapuri nAthan

The lord (nAthan) of vEdapuri [1], astride/sitting on top of (mIdu) a bull (viDai), came (vandAn) on a procession (bhavani)!

anupallavi
naDamADum Siva yOgan nAgamaNiyum bOdhan
kuDamuni paNindETTum kOdilA Siva nAthan (viDai mIdu…)

The dancing (naTamADum) [2] Siva yOgi (yOgan) [3], the wise one (bOdhan) who is adorned (aNi) with snakes (nAgam), the one who is extolled (Ettum) and worshipped (paNindu) by sage agastya (kuDamuni), the blemishless (kOdilA) Siva (Siva nAthan) (astride a bull, came on a procession).

caranam
nAdamisaikkum deva nArImaNigaL ADa
nAraNan biramanum narkaram siram cUDa
gIta gandharvarellAm kiLarisai yAzh olikka
kavi pADi endaiyar uLLam kutUgalikka (viDai mIdu…)

(The Lord of vEdapuri, astride a bull, came on a procession) accompanied by the celestial (deva) women (nArimaNigaL) [4] who play (isaikkum) music (nAdam) dancing (ADa) along, with vishNu (nAraNan) and brahma (biramanum) raising their hands (narkaram) above their heads (siram cUDa), and all (ellAm) the musical (gIta) demi-celestials (gandharvargaL) making (olikka) sweet music (kiLarisai) from their harps (yAzh), and our masters’ (endaiyar) hearts (uLLam) becoming rapturous (kutUhalikka) as they sing (pADi) paens (kavi),

FOOTNOTES
[1] This is on vEdapurISvarar near tiruvErkADu as explained by Rajani
[2] naDamADum can also mean one who is ambulatory
[3] the purpose of the juxtaposition is that a yOgan should be in the state of ascetic meditation, while naTamADum or naDamAdum is someone who is in a state of motion – the concept is that Siva combines the two opposite concepts – even as he performs his cosmic dance, his mind is in a yOgic trance
[4] corrected based on the Rajani’s input
