RK Laxman instilled a rare sense of humour and "doggedness" in the common man. He and his wife were great fans of KVN. At NCPA, KVN had introduced me to Mrs Kamala Laxman.
In 1984, I got a gift of the entire You Said It cartoons in paperback. We used to see the cartoons and laugh heartily. I was once travelling, and asked my 5 year old son what gift he wanted. He said a book with lots of pictures. I searched and found an excellent "illustrated dictionary" which had a picture for every listed word.
When I gave it, my son didn't like it. I said why, it had thousands of pictures!? He went and brought the You Said It book and said he had wanted one like that!

I was fortunate to play host to RKL in Manhattan & take him to various places which he enjoyed but to me his COMMENTS about these places are things I will never forget. Along with RKN with whom also I was lucky to spend quite a bit of time during his annual visits when I lived in Manhattan I am YET to meet two brothers who were AUTHENTIC GENIUSES-UNLIKE THE NOW A DAYS LOOSE USAGE OF THE TERM-.
BOTH OF THEM will live for ever in the history of CREATIVITY AT ITS BEST......VKV
I wish I HAD THE SENSE TO BUY a cassette recorder & recorded their words!.....

Our family knew the RKN/RKL family for over 60 years. My late uncle and he were thick chums in the late forties/early fifties. He was affectionately called DOODOO(HIS BROTHER RKN WAS CALLED KUNJAPPA)--i RECALL EVEN IN HISEARLY DAYS WITH toi, HE WAS EXCEPTIONALLY SELF CONFIDENT--ONCE IN ONE OF OUR FAMILY GET TOGETHERS IN bOMBAY IN THE EARLY FITIES, ONE OF OUR GUESTS REFERRED TO HIM AS THE DAVID LOW OF INDIA(DAVID lOW AS FORUMITES KNOW WAS A WORLD FAMOUS BRITISH CARTOONIST)--pROMPTLY CAME THE REPARTE FROM RKL-- CALL HIM THE R.K.lAXMAN OF BRITAIN!!--this was when he was hardly 30 years old!!!!
He was a good connoisseur of carnatic Music(as was his family) and occasionally "dabbled" with the Veena--their family Asthana Viodwan was Mysore Doraiswamy Iyengar. Both RKN/RKL were instrumental in getting MDI the Sangeetha Kalanidhi by vigorously championing the cause as at that time there was a Chennai bias distinctly!!!
Once I asked him--I was 13 years old--you are constantly lampooning politicians and is there not a danger that you might run out of material--his reply was he had high hopes that Indian Politics would give him enough fodder for three generations!!
He was an avid Motorcycle rider in his bachelor days--he used to come to Matunga where my uncle lived with us and both of them would go out for a spin and he would drop my uncle late and get back to his home in the Malabar hill area.
Two years back my cousin visited him in Pune--he was recovering from the stroke--that did not deter his sketching!!---he had outlived all his peers and recalled the days he spent with my late uncle.
He was a wonderful raconteur and although he grw up in Mysore and was fluent in Kannada he could speak the Madras Tamil equally fluently and one would think he was a native of Chennai!!
Like his brother RKN --despite being from a conventional middleclass Brahmin household with traditional expectations of education,civil service carreers he defied the conventions and was always selfconfident that he would succeed in his career--later on,when he moved to Pune TOI still needed him more and he worked on his own terms-no regular office attendances for meetings etc.
