Is this a fact?

I stumbled on this where Janaki says MSG has played the violin. It sounds very different and plain though, to me. And has MSG played , at all, for cine music? Or is she actually referring to someone else and this is factual error?

MSG played to film music compositions,is a fact. Mostly solo interludes and rarely as a lead violinist.

Thanks Ganesh for the link. The thodi seems to tone down the gamakas a bit and more in the 'thaye yasodha' mould but Abhogi is the usual, right?

It is amazing Janaki could do all this by learning this on the fly.

btw, I can understand well what she says. Is it more a tamilized malayalam? I am not sure I had this much ease with others' malayalam.

When I happened to witness a few recordings from this very Janaki several years ago, I understand they are required to have a very different skill . It was IR recording and and another Telugu song. They have to grasp at a fleeting speed of what the Music Director wants and produce. Sometimes they have sung 5 to 6 in a day when they were at thier peak. Nithyashree in one of her interviews had mentioned it - the short span of time time to grasp, memorize, and improvise ,convincing the director to be a big task.

Besides, both S Jananki and P. Suseela is not very good with their tamil and malayalam accent while speaking , and they have a strong Telugu accent. But, as they sing you wonder .. malayalam , kannada, tamil all comes out perfect at any range.

Well, P. Susheela did have 'tells' in tamizh - for instance, she would always pronounce the word 'rahasiyam' as 'rehasiyam'. I do know that she learned carnatic music for many, many years...
I am not that familiar with S. Janaki.

Did she claim to have learnt CM? I was of the impression that she has not formally learnt. Besides, I have not heard her sing any carnatic krithis , even albums like some that Janaki did with Nadhaswaram although she had not learnt too.

rashankar,

I am also talking about Susheela . In one of her interviews she said she cannot pin point anyone as guru as she had learnt the fundamental of singing through some teachers and had not learnt the formal carnatic music. Of the famous singers those days I think TMS was an A grade singer of all in radio I think . But, still all of them did a good job in their area and it does not matter anymore for them. :)

Smt.P.Susheela studied KM in Music College at Vijayanagaram, when Dwaram was Principal and she did give KM concerts before joining Gemini Studios.
Smt.S.Janaki is from musicians family but she had not formally learnt KM. She has a great lakshya gnanam by listening to the great maestros. This rare composition with todi and abhogi was the creation of Late L.Vaidyanathan, a maestro. She also had the privilege of working with great maestro music composers in Malayalam and Kannada whose masterpieces compositions were based on the KM in almost pure form. This experience and with her own talent eminently helped her.
