Re: Mozart meets Dikshidar
Nageswaran, thanks for the links. I listened to Deepti Navaratna's piece. It looks like that Mozart Meets Dikshithar was one song of an otherwise regular CM concert. Interesting arrangement. ( though dragging Mozart in is just for effect I suppose ).
Youtube gave a lot of related links of Deepti and she seems to have sung quite a wide variety of songs in many genres.
The one that was quite entertaining is this Jewish song in Greek: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4ulQeWnups
There is a raga that is close to this that I have in mind. Let us see if you all hear it the same way as well.

This could be called a "janya" of vakulabharanam
. The missing R1 in the ascent is suggestive of jaganmohini but the predominant use of N2 suggest vakulabharanam janya. A hypothetical vakra raga like this would fit this melody: S G3 M1 P D1 N2 D1 N3 S / S N2 D1 P M1 G3 R1 S. The avarohanam is plain vakulabharanam.

Yes, Vakulabharanam is what I had in mind. Thanks for the swaras Uday.
I can not get down to the swara level, but went by the familiarity with that scale from non-indian sources!

(Based on an old Jewish song Misirlou. A lot of jewish and flamenco songs sound a lot like this.)
And my carnatic reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlA4Dv4OADU#t=218

This instant guess that you do , VK , is what I miss. If I wanted , I would immediately start deciphering notes instead of letting my impulse do the task. So you win there. I should stop dissecting which has become a habit. You lose the pleasure of listening. I enjoy it differently though. I will get to our topic tomorrow - bit of traveling and beat down.

My first instinct was Vakulabharanam. But then I hummed MMG and it fitted in many places. Thanks Uday, VKM
