Nick,
You should have seen him in action that evening! "Like a nineteen year old', as Cienu remarked.

My Guru and Father, Sandhyavandanam Srinivasa Rao, facilitating TKM after a concert in Great Maestro T.K.Murthy gave mridangam accompaniment in Varasiddhi Vinayaka Temple, Besant Nagar, Chennai, sometime in the late eighties, said " TKM's Vidwath and Mastery is at par with Great Maestro Palghat Mani Iyer, the naada is different from PMI only due to his fingers being very short in nature. He scores over PMI with his unreserved and open support to all the Vidwans and Vidushees, unconditionally and cheerfully"

I feel sad that the maestro has not received any government recognition. I wonder if MSS did anything to correct the situation.

Second part of interview:
“Ask him what he thinks is the most unforgettable incident in his life and he will tell you of an MS incident.Once we were performing in a small town in Tamil Nadu. There was a huge crowd to listen to MS. So huge that it flowed out of the hall, and people sat on the nearby railway track. When a train came, people refused to get up. And the train had to just halt till the concert ended!”

In the second interview Sri TK Murthy claims that the Pudukottai school of mridangam has more or less disappeared, barring a few practitioners.

“Almost everyone who plays now, plays the Tanjavur style. While I am happy that this school of music lives on immortalizing the likes of my guru, I am sad that a highly evolved style like the Pudukkottai has few takers."

This is a very controversial statement. In fact, TKM has made this statement even at PSP's memorial events. There are many proponents of the Pudukkottai school who were very unhappy with this (inaccurate) characterization.
