Violin Duet - Mysuru M. Nagaraj and Mysuru Dr. M. Manjunath

Ghata - Giridhar Udupa
1. Mahaganapathim - Natta (O,S)
2. Raga sudha rasa - Andoliika (A)
3. Mamava sada janani - Kaanada (A,S)
4. Sakala graha bala neene - Athana
5. Raghuvamsha sudha - Kadanakuthoohala
6. Bhajare re manasa - Abheri (A,S,T)
7. Baaro krishnayya - Ragamalika

Opening day concert at Vani Kala Kendra was a grand affair. High energy concert, as expected from the brothers. But as it happens so often, veered into the noise territory. Abheri was supposed to be main but the alapana by Nagaraj was so short (albeit wonderful) that it does not qualify as main. Infact, the splendid Kaanada by Dr. Manjunath was much more detailed earlier in the concert. The other lighter pieces were all played excellently. Srimushnam Raja Rao provided some comic relief with his hilarious speech during vote of thanks (in that funny Tamilized kannada).
Good beginning to the Ramanavami season. Hope to catch more.

Kannada, no matter what you think, is the Urdu (army camp language) of South India.
PS. The word for army in Turkish is ordu and the garbled-up language spoken by Mongols, Turks, etc., got the name Urdu.

Emoticon disclaimers aside, it is important to brush up our (often nonexistent) sense of linguistic history. That was Kannada as spoken 1000 years back. Before that there was some sort of dialect, not a proper language, spoken in Karnataka!
A thousand years ago, Kannada already had a distinct linguistic identity, an enviable literary corpus - the highly incomplete remnants we have from then include two grammars and texts of poetics, more than a dozen campU kAvyas and countless epigraphs and inscriptions. The number of epigraphs in Kannada, from the first instance to 1000 AD, is the second largest, second only to Tamil, and leaving Sanskrt and the Prakrts far behind.
Any language that isn't a 'camp language' - serving as a caravan-serai for the intermingling of ideas and vocabulary is destined to meet an isolated inbred extinction. And all the natural languages of India have demonstrated a balance between resilient adaptability and a distinct sense of identity with great style.
It is true that geographically isolated Tamils in Karnataka and Andhra retain many archaic features in their vocabulary and grammar of Tamil, that are lost from mainland Tamil country. So it would be more appropriate to say that Rajarao's 'funny' speech was in Tamil as spoken a 1000 years ago, when Tamil had a more naturalised, less politically sanitized relation with its neighbouring languages.

Some people never learn, huh!
( I can't take one-liners in the garb of fun, and can't stay as dignified as Keerti. Harimau, You can take language lessons, or you have a choice of not making nasty remarks. Yes, I will also end it with a smiley, if that helps
