Sowmya, Cleveland Aradhana 2015

Sowmya’s concert was wonderful. I made sure I was ready for the concert. She did not disappoint. She started with Bhairavi raga Varnam Viriboni in Ata talam.
It was followed by a beautiful Saveri Alapana. Dr.Narmada followed her very nicely. It was the not-often heard kriti of Patnam Subramaniam Iyer- Etu Nammina O manasa and sang some swarams.
Then she gave a glimpse of the raga Harikamboji and sang Thyagaraja’s ‘chani todi. She elaborated the charanam and sang swarams. Sri Easwaran on the mridangam was very good- not too loud, but he went along with the song.
Then came beautiful Kalyani with all the verves floowed by the kriti Kanthimateem karuna.
Kalyani was followed by a beautiful Huseni alapana. The Huseni was like nectar. Dr.Narmada also did wonders with her violin and took us to the Music swarga! ‘Enna puniyam seideno’ was the song.

After the detailed Huseni, she sang Swathi Tirunal’s ‘Bogeendra Saayeenam ‘ in Kuntalavarali. in a fast speed.
A detailed Sankarabharanam, fit to be Lord Shiva’s Aabharanam, Thyagaraja’s seldom heard kriti ‘Sundareswarulu Nee’ was very good.After she sang swarams, the percussion team took over. Sri Easwaran’s Tani was melodious. ( I know nothing about Kanakku- just pleasing to the ear). Ghatam was played very well by the artist.
Kshetrayya’s Mukari padam ‘Osossi” brought back Brinda/Muktha to mind.
She followed the padam with Pattabhiramaiah’s javali ‘ Nee matale mayanura’ in poorvikalyani.
After a short Sindhubhairavi, she sang Swathi Tirunal’s Ramachandra Prabho’. The bhajan was very good. She finished with the Mangalam. Her music was still ringing inmy ears and heart. It was a very nice concert supported very well by Dr.Narmada, Easwaran Sir and ghatam artist, Chandrasekahar.

One of the earliest concerts at Cleveland and a special one! I was wrapped up in her singing. Some of us wrote about her concert. We have been listening to and watching so many programs that we hardly have time to write about them in detail. We appreciate Maduraimini who is undaunted by the volume of work (not the listening part but writing about it) in the midst of other demands in our lives too.
