Energetically feliticious Dr. Vijayalakshmy Subramaniam, holding doctorate in music, has a pleasant and sonorous voice. Her vocal recital featured at the Center for Performing Artists, Mountain View, CA on the 12th October 2014 under the aegis of Darbar Fine Arts was marked by good shruti alignment, chaste aesthetics and classism. Her perfection gained with discipline, unswerving commitment to the values and steadfastness in adhering to the intensity left an impression in the minds of the listeners.

She began her recital briskly with a tasteful Patnam Subramania Iyer’s varnam, “Eranapai” in “Hanumath Thodi” and proceeded to “Sitamma Mayamma” of St. Thyagaraja in “Vasantha” raga set to Rupaka tal, bringing out the raga’s fascinating features and insightful recital of this piece. The next was an alapana in “Brindavana Saranga” followed by Muthuswami Dikshithar’s, “Swaminathane Samrakshithoyam” set to Adi tal, paying obeisance to Lord Subramanya of Swamimalai with apt emphasis on the raga’s subtlety and attested to her assuring level of ingenuity. Her execution of the piece, “Brovamma Tamasamele” of Syama Sastri in the raga “Manji” set to Misra Chapu was agile and enjoyable in the form aligned to the shruti. Papanasam Sivan’s immortal kriti, “Ka Va Va Kandha Va Va” in the raga “Varali” was sung with precision.

A delicate aesthetics ran through the alapana in “Bilahari” and the composition of St. Thyagaraja “Dorakuna Ituvantiseva” which served to underline that music has to be felt by the singer and the audience. The neravel in “Ramabrahma tanayudau” in charanam and the cascade of sangatis and swaras followed is expounded with the focus on the raga’s time-honoured melodic sancharas. A well-executed Ragam, Thanam, Pallavi (RTP) in “Shanmugapriya”, highlighted Dr.Vijayalakshmi’s recital. The Pallavi, “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Da Ni……”, composed by her Guru and mentor, Pallavi King, Dr. T.R.Subramaniam, was well conceived and the precision evoked special praise and the swara ragamalikas include, “Mayamalavagowla”, “Naganandhini”, “Kirnavali”, “Dhanyasi” and “Yagapriya”. The whole exercise explains the vocalist’s erudition. The singer proceeded to light pieces - “Chinnanchiru Kiliye” of Subramania Bharathiar in the raga malika, “Kapi”, “Maund”, “Vasantha”, ”Tilang” and “Neelamani” which brought ecstacy. Purandara Dasar’s, “Jagaddhodharana” in “Kapi” and a “Meera Bajan – Sakhi Ri” in “Boopal Thodi”, tuned by the singer herself brought devotional bliss and fervor. A thillana in “Dwajawanti” enthralled the connoisseurs and was the culmination of the event.

Mr. V.V.S. Murari, accompanied on the violin, lent a commendable support and ably demonstrated his prowess, making a deep impression on the listeners with his deft handling of the ragas – “Vasantha”, “Brindavana Saranga”, “Bilahari”, “Shanmugapriya” and the ragamalika formats. Poovalur Sriji on the mridangam provided able laya support. His first Thani Avarthanam in Adi tal ½ idam after “Bilahari” and the another after RTP were laced with rhythmic accuracy.

This concert really happened in October 2014? If so, it's taken a gestation period of nearly 6 months for this to be posted here... :)
