Re: Tamizh/Malayalam/Bengali New Year
Thanks and Happy New Year To you all.
Ravi, Prime Minister Sri. Narendra Modi's tweets are my big source of info for events in the calendar of every state. (his social media people are quite tireless ). His tweets are like yours, in multiple languages. These guys are good, to get it right for every language.
For Tamilians the tweet was
My best wishes to my Tamil friends on Puthandu. I pray that the coming year marks the fulfilment of all your wishes & brings happiness.
btw, just so you all know, you are all missing wishing a few regions (NM office is my guru)
Wishing all my Odia sisters and brothers on Maha Vishuba Sankranti. I pray for a wonderful year ahead, full of prosperity and joy.
On Poila Boishakh my greetings to all Bengali friends. Have a great year ahead, Shubho Nabo Barsho.
On Bohag Bihu, heartfelt greetings to my sisters and brothers of Assam.
--
My other learning from NM office is from the flood of greetings from them on March 21st for
Ugadi (Andhra, Karnataka)
Bihar Diwas (Bihar)
Navroz Mumarak (parsi)
Sajibu Nongmapanba ( Manipur )
Navreh (kashmir)
Gudi Padwa (Maharashtra)
Cheti Chand (Sindhi)
-
All this led me to learn that Balinese celebrate the same day as Ugadi as their new year - Nyepi - with a day of silence where the entire country shuts down. Non Hindus also observe it fully. In Indonesia also it is a holiday ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyepi )

Interesting...
Another tidbit: In one of my alumni groups, we discovered that regardless of the calendar used (solar, lunar etc.), 2015-2016 is called 'manmatha nAma samvatsara'

That is interesting.
Do they also start from Chithrai for month names?( allowing for some spelling diff).
Also wondering why this split among these two sets of regions?

The months' names are also similar
Chiatra, VysAka, jyEshta,AshADa,,shrAvaNa, bhAdrapada, ashvina, kArtika,MargashIrsha, pausha, mAgha and phAlguna.
The names of the months indicate the star which falls on the pourNami day of that particular month.
For example, in the Chaitra month, on pourNami day it is Chitra nakshatram.
VaishAka month pourNami is vishAka nakshatram.
MAgha month is maga nakshatram.

MalayALam calendar has names according to the rasi I think. Starting with mETam for the period April-May the twelve months are named after the twelve rasis.

In Muthuswami Deekshitar's kritis, we come across the month's name.
In sidhdhivinayakam he says 'bhAdrapada mAsa chaturthyAm'.
In Harihara putram, he says, phAlguna mAsa pourNimAvataram.
In sarasa daLa nayana, he says 'mAgha mAsOtsava prabhava'.
There may be more.
