The concert was originally scheduled for April 19,2015. When we had already driven
about 40 miles towards Tampa, a friend called and informed us that the concert was
cancelled due to Sudha's sore throat and that it would be rescheduled for April 24.
The email sent by Swaralaya didn't reach us until after we had left for Tampa.
1. Today Sudha started her concert at 6:20 p.m with HMB's dAru varNam "mAthE malayathvaja
samjAthE" in kamAs raga, preceded by a short alApana and followed by kalpana swaras.
2. She then sang dyAnaslokam "sAnthAkAram bhujaga sayanam" followed by AnnamAchArya's
BouLi raga composition "sriman nArAyaNa" with emotion.
3. Next she started ThyagarAja's suddha sAvEri composition "dAri nee Telusukonti" from
'sundari nee' and traversed along traditional beaten tracks with swaras at "sundari nee"
for a total of 18 minutes.
4. After 10 minutes of alApana and 7 minutes of violin return in subhapanthuvarALi
Dikshitar's "sri satyanArAyaNam upAsmahE" was the sub-main item with neraval and
swara at "matsya kUrma"
5. ThyAgarAja's atANa compositon "Elaa nEE dayarAdu" and
6. KOteeswara Iyer's "aruL seyya vEndumayyA" in rasika priya were brief fillers before
the main item,
7. my favorite raga karaharapriya alApna for 14 minutes & 8 min. of violin return.
At this point I was looking forwad to some off the beaten track comosition, but
oft-repeated "chakkanirAja" followed with traditional fare of 11 min of neraval &
swara at "kantiki sundara".
Brief but excellent Thani for 11 min.by Vaidyanathan & Guruprasad was very enjoyable.
8,9,10.Thukkadas, perhaps requests, "kurai ondrum illai", an Abhung "bArO pAnduranga"
(mAnd ?)and "bhO sambO" in rEvathi concluded the program.
Violin by Raghavendra Rao was outstanding and his violin was oozing nectar at many points.
Swaralaya sceretary announced that it was Sudha's birthday and the audience
joined the chorus of 'Happy Birthday to you' and a cake was presented to Sudha.
All in all it was a good enjoyable program, though I had a feeling of 'de ja vu',
"I have heard all this from her before". I was mighty glad that I was spared my
dreaded "sai bhajan" !

Sundararajan,
Didn't know that you had to return home after venturing out last time (when the concert was cancelled).
A very good review. Sounds like a good concert all round. I am sure she pleased many a soul that day (even without a Sai bhajan
).
No RTP but oft heard main (in one of my favorite rAgA too!), but the ensemble was a good one!
Looks as though you are in the mood for writing reviews. Please go to the Cleveland Concerts thread and review some more which you have heard

Sundararajan,
Thank you for your review on Sudha Raghunathan's Tampa concert. Looks like she covered many composers and ragas. I guess, it must be hard on the artists as to the list for their concerts. They have already participated in the Cleveland Aradhana. Cleveland can still be cold in April, particularly for those coming from South India. I saw many people wearing coat at the Aradhana. May be they got a sore throat and cold. Then they make a trip around this country, moving every day or every other day. They cannot sing the same kriti they sang before. They have to choose the ragas carefully. This narrows down their choices. They don't have the time to practice in the morning, like back home. I appreciate the artists changing songs at the different towns. Just a passing thought about the problems of the artists.
Your revie was good.
