Re: Ghatam Vidwan EM Subramanyam
Vidwan Sri EM Subramaniam was a brilliant artiste, unassuming to a fault and simplicity personified. At several concerts, I have witnessed him carrying his ghatam and quietly leave the hall after the concert without any hullabaloo. During an illustrious career that spanned several decades, he was heavily involved with the government music college and trained innumerable students both at the college and outside. An A-graded artiste of AIR and Doorsarshan, he had accompanied all top-ranking artistes and was conferred the Sangeetha Natak Academy Award in 2011. I have had the pleasure of listening to him play with Sivaraman sir on many occasions and have been awe-struck by his dexterity and speed. Many years ago, at a new year's concert at PSS, where Sivaraman sir and Sri. EMS were accompanying Sri. Ramani and Sri. MSG (if my memory serves me right), UKS sir spoke very highly of Sri. EMS and endearingly called him "Anjaneyar" (in reference to the fact that he would very closely shadow and mirror the mrudangam artiste much like Anjaneya shadowed Lord Rama). Coming from a vidwan of UKS sir's stature, this was very high praise indeed! We have lost a great vidwan and more importantly, a virtuous human being. Since the CM world today is so self-absorbed flaunting and parading its wealth and talent across the 7 continents, I'm afraid Sri. EMS's greatness may never get recorded for posterity. His requiem is his own inner music that kept him going for over 5 decades. May Sri. EMS rest in peace.

Bhaktha,
A moving account about an excellent artiste you had the privilege to know and had heard many times.
Your last line: how true for any musician--for that matter any one who comes to live on this earth! That's the essence of existence, I suppose--that he lived the way you say he did. His music mattered, and none of the pomp and glory some do attain, or long for!

May I know who are his performing disciples.
