The vast majority of these names -- and those posted earlier -- are the names of goddesses of the Hindu pantheon. As such, most of them are already in use as names of persons.

In fact, it is likely that people named the ragas also using various names found in Lalitha Sahasranamam and other such books. Since most of the ragas were created and named after about the 17th century, one could assert confidently that the names of various goddesses came into being first and then adopted for naming the ragas.

Gowri, Sulini, Lalitha, etc., are other names of Parvathi. So, by naming your child Gowri, you are stretching it when you say that the girl was named for the raga.

Think about it: would there be a Sankarabharanam without there being a Sankara? Or a Shanmukhapriya without a Shanmukha?

The original poster mentioned "Sahana". Obviously, she had the raga in mind. But I must point out that the raga's name is not Sahana as mentioned but "Shahana", with an "h".

Sahana (bereft of the "h" as mentioned by the OP) is still a girl's name, but I am not sure that the raga's name pronounced correctly with the "h" would be an apt name to give to a girl, or a boy for that matter.

Ha..ha..Yes indeed. The process itself is a lot of fun. We are helping someone with a baby boy's name and there are so many dimensions to consider. Length, pronounceability, 'shorten-ability to a good name', relative rare( not commonplace), modern sounding but preferably sanskrit based and above all the mom & dad should feel natural and comfortable with the name at the gut feel level.

For names, 3 pages is like a dog's tail I was expecting many dozens since everyone will have their favorites. But I guess we are constraining it here for CM related names, that too girl names. May be we have exhausted all angles, but more suggestions are of course welcome since they can be useful for others and not just for the purposes of the OP.

In some of the baby shower, the participants are requested to write their favorite names, if boy and if girl, on a big board which is presented to the would be mother. They get to mull over the names and ultimately make their own decision. How about that?

Well, I don't want to be a spoilsport, will take back the comment--but let's just run the list once more (with meanings where possible), and THAT will be truly be of help to the couples and their families and friends. We can help them with rAgA names and more musical terms by making a list from which they can at a glance choose names from, and mull over them. An alphabetical list will make it easier?
