Re: Trichur Brothers for NZCMS SU15 30/5/15
The brothers are youthful and informal. They had instant connect with many in the audience with their light-hearted approach. Blessed with great voices, they could sing anything and you would feel it was great. But they do back that God-given gift with some skill. This is the first-time I have heard them Live. The recordings I have heard in the past, I thought they lean towards the madhyama/dhurita kala. I was only partly right. Unlike most other duos, they sing all their alapanas together. I can see why others choose not to do that since ultimately every musician has his own path of development. But these two blend beautifully. They also have a Hindustani style of one holding the anchor note while the other seeks musical avenues.
Forgive me the sacrilege of saying that Dikshitar's Navagraha Kritis can be tedious. As many students learn them for exams, you suffer the drag with the lengthy, wordy, repetitive strains of the pieces. But TB took out the boring and put Yadukula Kambhoji into Divakara Tanujam. It was truly a lesson for all aspiring musicians in the hall that evening. Varali was lovely and as you hear them separately, the 'twang' becomes audible in Ramkumar bringing SSI to mind. Ahiri was beautiful too.
RTP was the star for the evening. The 'Jog' essay by all 3 (specially Bhaskar) was outstanding. All the ragas flashing by like stations on a fast train ride were amazing and ended fittingly with a robust thani. As proof of their informality, SriKrishna vanished from stage saying he needed a quick break. Ramkumar broke into viruttam 'Krishnaya Vasudevaya' When the partner hadn't returned in a couple of minutes, Ramkumar spread his hands and 'Where is Krishna?' It had everyone giggling. When he did arrive, 'Omana Thingal' by Swathi Thirunal was a beautiful composition rendered with great feel. Must hunt for lyrics and recording.
Both TB and Rama's concerts were 4 hours and they entertained everyone very well indeed. I must mention 'Namami Gange' a project by Govt of India to Clean Ganga. TB have composed the title music and it was premiered that evening in Auckland. Please view it on Youtube and support the worthy Cause

MV - an exuberant review to match the concert, eh?
Here is a previous thread with a discussion on the lovely lullaby composed by Raja Irayavarman Tampi: http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic. ... ana+tingal
The most haunting version of this lullaby (in Arabhi) is the one by Sikkil SrI Gurucharan and SrI Anil Srinivasan...

I read your review on Sowmya. Looks like a great concert. I wanted to listen to the clips you've put up before saying anything. Busy (short) week for me as I try and wrap up work before heading off to Sydney on Sat
