=========

This was a 2.5 hours concert that was very well done by sri SRS and party with lots of manodharmam and sowkiyam.

In the opening mEru samAna, sri SRS did niraval & swarams @ Kanaka BhUshanamula. The swarams were brisk, adding some slow tempo swarams would have been nicer and more Semmangudi-isque!

The chalanATTa AlApanA for EdayyA gati enakku was very soulful.

parimaLa ranganAtham bhajEham was the main piece (though it did not include thani).
Full credit to SRS for bringing out the intricate hues and beauty of hamIrkalyAni in the AlApanA and later in the swarams at the pallavi line.
He did full justice to this MD classic not often heard in recent times.

The RTP was very elaborate and well done. The pallavi line was "kadirvElA unadu pAdam thuNaiyE | OrArumukanE devAthidEvanE" . I guess the phrase "unadu pAdam thuNaiyE OrArumukanE" must be a favorite of pallavi composers :-)
sri Viju's response in raga and in the pallavi line exploration was apt, imaginative, and innovative. sri Sankaranarayanan's thani was energetic and explosive, packed with sollukattus, soothing modulations, and generous and appropriate use of the thoppi. I would have loved to listen to some rAgamAlika but perhaps time was a constraint on this all-day program by CMANA.

The madhuvanti AlApanA was very soothing and the lyrics for rAma kathA were very poetic mixing sanskrit and telugu. I later found out out this is a composition of Dr. NUkala SatyanArAyanA gAru.

Overall, a very well delivered and enjoyable concert by sri SRS on his maiden US tour with very able support from sri Viju and sri Sankaranarayanan.

WHy cant they have atleast a 3 hour concert. Perhaps that can be answered by few of the forumites who are part of CMANA.

I have heard all the numbers that you have mentioned by shertalai Ranganatha sharma . He always has a special liking to sing dikshitar krithis. May be you missed a weighty main krithi.
Tx for the review.keep them coming.

@rajeshnat, Thanks for your comments. I too happily noticed his leaning towards more MD kritis! And I too wished the concert was for 3 hours.

Sankar Narayanan: Thanks for your review. Sri Ranganatha Sarma is an excellent musician and I'm glad you were able to enjoy his concert in NJ. I am also glad that he was able to showcase one of Nookala-garu's compositions.

Are you sure this is his maiden tour? I remember him performing in Cleveland a few years ago and then he gave a few other concerts in other places.

Btw, you seem to be attending concerts in NJ, Denver, Austin & Philly! Way to go sabha hopping :)

mahavishnu: Thanks for your comments.

Re maiden tour: You are right he did perform at the Cleveland Aradhana a few years ago and had follow-on concerts. I was referring to a full-ledged schedule organized as a tour. Just semantics I guess! But agree with you.
Re sabha-hopping: thanks for noticing! I live in NJ but was fortunate to go these other venues this year. Last year we were able to go to Boston & WestCoast for Sanjay concerts. Want to do more but life & work keep interrupting :-)

Sankar Narayanan, I like your concluding line :)

RasikAs we are, and love to listen to our music
But 'life and work keep interrupting'--a busy world :(

Ah, a desert island! No work, but what a life!
Only if allowed more than ten discs to take!*

*BBC's long running radio program Desert Island Discs where celebrities were asked which pieces of music they would rather listen to, if they were castaways on a desert island. They then played the music in the program.

Was nice meeting you and your Srimathi R in Boston :)

Serthalai Ranganatha Sarma's music was a good thing to listen to, traveling all those miles...
