A very short concert on a Friday evening in the basement of a family home. Suryaprakash conducted a two week long intensive training in in Manodharma for his students, which culminated in a series of short performances by each child or youth. The performances ranged from a simple Mohanam Varnam, to interesting alapana and songs, all in Tamil, in Kharaharapriya, Saveri, Varali, etc. Each and every shishya performed with confidence and his most senior disciples seem to be well on their way to being able to perform concerts. Suryaprakash later rather sweetly dedicated the concert that followed the performances to his beloved Shishyas, and said that he had tried to sing as many as he could of the compositions that he had taught them. In fact, he was really singing for them. Clearly he is a loving guru.. He wrote notes as the students performed and they communicated with each other through their eyes and their smiles as they sang.

Sanjay Sharma, one of our young rising local talents, was very good on the violin, and this was the first time I heard him play for an established musician, offering a very competent performance, especially in his fluent high-speed Kannada Gaula swara returns and the Shubha Pantuvarali alapana.. He drew praise from Suryaprakash for his unfaltering swaras in Kannada Gaula and everyone appreciated his Shubhapantuvarali perforamance. It just makes us all so proud when the children of our community play so well. If I remember right, he trains under Smt. Pavani Srikanth.

Suryaprakash disappointed us all :) by shortening the concert, which lasted just a little over an hour, but it was because the guests were late arriving and the children’s performances naturally started late and there was a short intermission for dinner. The Shubhapantuvarali turned out to be the main item, and even the percussionists were surprised at such an early tani opportunity. They realized it was a short concert and played an aptly short tani avartanam, lasting just a couple of minutes. Shubhapantuvarali alapana was enjoyable and his voice worked really well with a few fast paced sancharas and minute swaras alternating with more meditative interludes. Sanjay Sharma was effective and I couldn’t help thinking that with a little modulation he could work wonders. He’s only about 13 or 14 I believe..

The post-items went quickly.. The speaker at the end of the concert highlighted the range of composers represented in the list of songs. The highlight of that for me was a lovely song called Vande, Thunai Thande in Shuddha Dhanyasi it seemed.. He announced the name of the composer later, it turned out to be a piece by Arasi.. :) I recently had an opportunity to listen to another amazingly lovely piece by Arasi in Kalyana Vasantham also beautifully rendered by Suryaprakash, Inru Varuvano, Naalaiyo.. I’m looking forward to listening to more lovely pieces by her.

Suryaprakash really sang sensitively, and I must say I was looking forward to an rtp having heard recordings of his on Carnatic Radio and the wonderful concert at SSVT a while ago. But it was getting late, and I ought not to complain, being one of the latecomers myself - I reached almost an hour late, with Friday evening traffic and my gps being a little tricky, and they even waited a little longer for a good audience to form, which was a good thing to encourage the children and validate all their hard work.

Ranganayaki,
Thanks for the review and compliments.

Suryaprakash sparkles, whether it's a four hour concert or a short one like this, and his wanting to showcase his students, his encouragement and friendliness are all natural to him.
He has, to a great extent inherited his parama guru's 'jilu jiluppu' (sweet verve?).

Now, waiting for his Rasikalaya London concert review.

vandE thuNai thandE enaik kAkkum kandanE! was sung by Neela Ramgopal in Vol:2. It can be found on the web in Venkatakailasam's cache. He did a beautiful job of adding lovely visuals for most of her renderings.

Surya sings my songs beautifully.
