How much time you took to get in to each steps in learning Carnatic music...

Post by Asish »

I too understand music is an ocean... And guru or teacher will be different from one to another in the style of teaching... Even the students grasping powers will be different... But it is nice to know how others gone through their journey... Can you all share how much time you took for each sessions .. This can help big gingers to keep some mile stones and motivated...

For example...

3 months for saralai, jandai and dattu varisais..
1 month for alankarams..
7 months for 27 geethams....
5 months for 12 swarajaathis..
2 years for 28 Varnams
3 years for keerthanam and Krithis around 100
5 years raagam thanam pallavi

This is a rough example which may not have any relation with yours... Kindly update with the time and how many you learnt from your teacher only... I know we refer books and audits to learn extra...
Please share your experiences....

My grand daughter Srinidhi learnt music from the respected Akella Mallikarjuna Sharmaji, our forumite.
Barring the childish nature of skipping classes on flimsy reasons, she had learned music to the extent
of giving one hour concert in our Global Rasikas Meet in 2010 in six months of effective time.

Sri Sharmaji uses the modern technology tools of skye etc for effective teaching methods.

The first and foremost requirement is a very good teacher and the children should be taught music from
the age of 8 years.

Time span depends on student and age, but for people who are challenged in talam and sruthi.

Chi. Shreenidhi, 11 year old grand-daughter of Shri S. Nageshwaran, attended music-classes on Skype weekly twice only. Even then I did never sing for more than 1% in any of the classes but initiated her to sing mostly depending upon the notated, audio and video-files.

Any mother eats very little in the beginning just to show her kid how to eat the things. The mother who eats all along with her kid is not a mother at all but eater or cheater. The same thing applies to music also. If the kid is initiated to learn the respective grammar in this way he/she can proceed further on his/her own just like going to school regularly on his/her own. Unbelievably, that simple it is if it is learnt at the tender age like Vedas. Education must be learnt at the tender age only like the marriage in the youth. amsharma
