Average concert. I expected much more after listening to his youtube videos (which were really good). He seemed tired and was coughing in between the concert. Maybe the winter in Sydney affected his voice.
Violin was very good.
Mridangam was not upto the mark - talam was being missed and abaswarams also. Has a long way to go. Mridangam artistes parents had organised this concert by inviting Ravikiran from India to promote their son. I think because mridangam was not so good, Ravikiran lost interest and did not sing well

I am all for considering the mridangam a melody instrument, but how did the mridangam produce apaswarams?HarishankarK wrote: Mridangam was not upto the mark - talam was being missed and abaswarams also.

I don't know that much about mridangam but i can feel when the sound is not right. Like summa thattaradhu. There were a few instances like that. It was not sunaadam.

dear friend harishankark,
i am new to this forum but have been a silent reader of this forum from sydney.
could not resist following up on this thread as i attended this concert.
i dont know any of the artists personally but loved this concert absolutely.
surprisingly i loved his voice and enjoyed the way he reached the upper pa or da in saveri (my daughter who sings tells me it is upper da) with ease.
violin was very good too. (sampath)
i agree though that the mridangam and kanjira was not up to the mark of the rest of the two artists - but appreciate the fact that local talent is being encouraged though. here in sydney, we need to build the local talent too. (
i loved the emotional anandabairavi and saveri.
my daughter tells me that the "idam" for the neraval was before the samam in the sri rajagopala keertanam.
i guess it started with the words "murari...hari.." (cant rememebr the exact lines.
just few words from a listener who loved this concert and wanted to share it with others.
cheers. (mate!!

Hi syd_murthy,
Nice to meet you here in this forum. Glad to know you enjoyed the concert.
I had been listening to G Ravikiran in youtube in anticipation of this concert and found his youtube concerts really good. Plus that he is a student of TMK. That is why i went to this concert.
But for me i found that this concert was not so satisfactory. I though he had some voice problems, a couple of sruthi laspses here (didn't your daughter notice this!) and there and also the bad mridangam.
For me, having come from UAE to Sydney, i feel that many many concerts are being organised here. Youth festival concerts are held every month and then there is the Sri Lankan organised festival that took place in June. Then again Pallavi organisation have their concerts in August. Recently Syama Sastri day was observed.
By the way the newest sabha in Sydney is Sadja not Shadjam. Although it means Shadjam, the one constant note.
