Half the performers are locals and/or mallus.

"Veena- the divine instrument is not getting a place in the Navarathri Mandapam where Goddess Saraswathi is being worshipped. Violin Duet has been accommodated."

Probably, to them, violin is the new veena. :)

Sanjay, rama verma and Amutha venkatesh are always featured in navarathri mantapam. Rest 6 are in rotation. Nice to see the golden girl (parassala ponnammal) is singing- I am assuming she will be assisted by NJ Nandini. BEst wishes.

While we may comment. the organisers perhaps have a right to decide.
Incidentally, why does this not belong to Event Announcements?

Both Rama Varma and Amrutha Venkatesh play the veena well.

In fact I didn't know they accommodated instrumental concerts here since the festival is to "sing" navaratri kritis.

Rama Varma is doing quietly the best for CM. He is also changing the tradition and it requires not just the will, but the power to convince the others. For example, he has included lady singers. Perhaps, addition of instrumental music is something new he has done. All said and done, the vocal concerts attract more listeners.

Since its inception, the festival included two veena concerts which continued till a decade back. KSNarayanaswamy, K.K.Sivarman, MK Kalyanakrishna Bhagavthar, R.Venkatraman, were regular players. KSN and MKK might be Asthana Vidwans also. Later, once Dorasiswamy Iyengar, Ravi Kiran also have played. Once Ramani gave a flute recital there. During the last decade when many changes have occured, Veena was gradually sidelined. Now Violin has entered.

How preposterous! Look at the Music Season in Chennai. It is all Tamil Brahmins from Chennai and the NRI Brahmins who can cough up the dollars!

You mean to say Rohan doesn't have disposable income he can use to buy his way into the Chennai Music Season?

Maybe we can take up a collection on this forum for that purpose!

Accompanists do not count. They are treated like dirt in Chennai. I have more than ten years of experience and have had the advantage to get close to the secretaries of many leading sabhas and they have confided in me what they pay to the accompanists. It is pathetic. Even with main artists the story is no different. Two years ago Rohan played for a senior vocalist from Kerala at 6.PM in a leading sabha and I happened to be in the Green Room after the concert. The sabha paid him just to cover his train ticket and hotel. But he stayed near Chennai Central. So he had to pay 100 rupees both ways to cover his auto charges and he was begging them. That is Chennai for you! I can cite scores of such examples.
Any way doesn’t worry about Rohan. He is in a much bigger league. He doesn't live by CM alone, thankfully. He has two managers, one manages his schedules and one manages his travels. The one who manages his schedules handled a four time Grammy Award Winner of Percussion. He pays them decently for their work. Rohan tells me that he is receiving calls from top notch CM musicians in Chennai to arrange "an American Agent" for them! It is not that easy. The bastion of CM and Tamil Brahmins, The Hindu covers him regularly and even during the season whether or not he is in Chennai because they know what he is what he is doing to globalize South Indian Percussion. NBC, a national TV Channel in US interviewed him recently and have asked him to appear in more shows. That is the level he is working on. So don't try to have any pity on him.
As for your accusations of Rohan not having money to "buy out" Chennai sabhas, the only payment I made was the most transparent one time membership of 100$ to Hamsadwani. That was during his first visit to Chennai. The same year two sabhas asked me to pay $1000 so he can play in 1PM concert! I showed them my middle finger. One sabha was the respected Raga Sudha (SV Krishnan) and ironically Rohan played for T.N.Krishnan in the same sabha few years later without making any payments but receiving a payment!
To cut the story short, desist from your immature comments and say something constructive. Ideally we should talk to each other. You can then vent your anger. If you want I can give my phone number.

rvk, With your doctorate, infinite knowledge of how things work can you put on your PROFESSORIAL HAT & CAN YOU EXPLAIN why any accompanist plays at all in Chennai? AS ONE who has been involved in arranging concerts in CHENNAI & N.A. SINCE 1959 YOU ARE ONLY WRITING THINGS THAT WILL "IMPRESS" ignorant persons in this area.......
YOUR VITUPERATIVE WRITINGS AS I WROTE YOU BEFORE are actually SPOILING the good name & the great talents of ROHAN. MY HONEST OPINION IS LESS YOU SAY BETTER OFF YOU ARE GOING TO BE. AN ADMIRER & WELL WISHER OF ROHAN. VKV

Dear KVC, What is even more OFFENSIVE is to mention the name of S.V.Krishnan who is not around to reply to rvk's NON-SENSE.
I can tell you that his daughter when I told her I knew her father & told her of his IMMENSE CONTRIBUTIONS in ENCOURAGING& PROVIDING CHANCES AT RAGA SUDHA FOR PROMISING UPCOMING ARTISTS REFUSED TO TAKE THE USUAL CLOSE TO 10K RS. HALL RENT & WOULD ACCEPT ONLY 5K because I was arranging a function in memory of MMI (WHO WAS WELL KNOWN FOR SINGING MORE THAN 75 PERCENT OF HIS CONCERTS FREE)! I did not even know her at that time......VKV

Main is already known! so song list is partially known..

Request mods to move out/delete unwanted comments from this thread.. Navarathri mandapam is something else, and all these comments doesn't have a place here.

VKV,
When someone asked me why I go to Raga Sudha Hall every time I need a venue for an event, all I could say was, ''where else can I possibly go, when it's a pleasure to have all the uncomplicated dealings, where the ambiance is just ideal and the support I get can't be matched?" :)

Talk about taking too good a thing for granted, and for taking our frustrations out of something which stands for sense and sensibility in music :(

My heart goes out to Rohan too...:(

Dear Arasi,
I am glad&gratified that a person of your stature takes time out to say the truth. IT ALWAYS HELPS as Mahatma Gandhi said: It is far better to tell the truth not because it is morally correct but in telling lies one has to tell more lies for ever & ever to cover up the truth......VKV VKV

I personally think one can hear the best music at Ragasudha hall (Nada Inbam) - where you don't have to pay or know people or go at 5 AM to get tickets (which I do at times at MA). They host music that is not often featured in the "leading" "big" sabhas. I am new to the music season in Madras - having attended only the last 5 years. Never seen Mr. Krishnan - but I believe he was the man behind the Sabha and a lover of Veena, my favorite instrument. The acoustics (surprisingly) is excellent for a small hall and gives a sense of good feeling hearing first class music. So, Mr/Mrs Krishnamurthy your comments are out of line and don't belong to this thread.
BTW - in India they (still) wave with all the 5 fingers :) I have heard a lot about Rohan, have not attended a concert of his. Good luck to him. Which NBC show featured him - was it a national show or a local station? Am interested to see it....

Dear G.G,
Sri.S.V.Krishnan is no more. ALL THE CURRENT YOUNG ARTISTS WHO ARE FAMOUS NOW CAN VOUCH FOR HIS ENCOURAGEMENT IN HAVING THEM PERFORM AT RAGA SUDHA HALL WELL BEFORE THE SO CALLED FAMOUS MADRAS SABHAS.....
His daughter Jaya is doing an EXCELLENT JOB in following in his foot steps & the concerts there are the BEST NOT ONLY FOR THE MUSIC BUT THE AMBIENCE. UTTER LACK OF COMMERCIALISM REEKING IN THE SO CALLED LEADING INSTITUTIONS....VKV

VKV,
Thanks for your thinking highly of me (deserving of your praise, I may not be :) ). You don't have a mean thought in you, and that's why you are generous in your ways.

Old fools, MAS and all, some grumble :?:

There is yet another thread where I thought Rohan's mother had posted about Rohan's interview. On seeing it again, I see no difference in the initials. Was that then posted by the doctor as well? :?

Dear Arasi, The interesting thing is that if you somewhat study the posts of the person with different IDS almost word for word they are identical! TRULY VERY UNIMAGINATIVE FOR A PH.D..... ;) ;) Statistically if one calculates the probability of a different person writing EXACTLY the same thing is VERY VERY LOW!...I got into this only because of the ATROCIOUS THINGS WRITTEN ABOUT VVS as well as the CLEVELAND ARADHANA.....I will retire from this subject till the atrocious list starts again next year!......VKV

Dear Rasikas
I do apologize for dropping names, especially of a person who is no more. The administrators can delete my posting if they want. But I have scores of similar experiences dealing with sabhas and artists. I have done that for more than 10 years in India and the US. If you hear some of my experiences you will be shocked. In fact I saluted SV Krishnan for his taste of artists (GNB, MDR, Musri etc) that matched well with mine. He was very open with me and was very critical of some of the modern day instrumentalists and vocalists. We used to chat for for hours. His contributions can not be under emphasized. Most important as far as I know he was from Palghat!

Indeed I had the same gut feeling about duplicate ids even in Sanjay effigy burning post - language , style, selection of words, sarcasms.. But, one did not respond to other. So , I think this rasikas.org too , like anywhere in the web is full of double ghost writers.
