Godess in the song "Kheera Sagara"

Post by SriKrishnan »

I have a question the meaning/ Godess being addressed in the song "Kheera sagara sayana" in MayamalavaGaula by Mysore Maharaja.

The Pallavi goes like this :
Ksheera saagara shayana vakshasthala nivaasinim pranamaami
Smara jananim manonmanim paapavimochanim loka jananim niranjanim
Which is clearly addressing Lakshmi

Where as in AnuPallavi & Charanam - it seems to be addressing Kamakshi :
Shivamodinim

Kaanchipura vaasinim Kanjadalaaya taakshim Kaamaakshim

Ofcourse, we can both are the forms of Devi in a broader sense. But is it usual to address two different ones in a song ?

Sir,
The last line is
ambAM zrIvidyA-rasAsvAdinIM

The composer is addressing the prayer to zrIvidyA or ambA or the ultimate female deity who is represented by both Lakshmi and Parvati (and even Sarasvati)
This is the crux of zAkta pantha

This is the same as Lalithasahasranama... Many words refer to Lakshmi as well as Parvati etc. there.

Shiva Shaktyaika roopini Lalithambika -- In Sri Vidya Upasana it is Devi who is Saraswati, Lakshmi and Parvati

I am hesitating since it's a lyric thread, but I could not resist myself -- Listen to it from none other than : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJqlNS0oiAU

Srinath, thank you for that lovely video link!
MSS prefaces the song with a shloka from Anandalahari by Adishankara:
mukhe te tAmbUlaM nayanayugaLe kajjalakalA
lalATe kAshmIraM vilasati gaLe mauktikalatA .
sphuratkA~nchI shATI pR^ithukaTitaTe hATakamayI
bhajAmi tvAM gaurIM nagapatikishorImaviratam

I bow down to thee, oh goddess Gauri, beloved daughter of the lord of the mountain, whose lips are stained with betel, eyes adorned with collyrium, forehead with saffron mark, neck with a string of pearls, and the waist wrapped in glittering Kanchi silk, tied with a golden belt!

So, this kRti was discussed in the elaborate Wodeyar thread (if one has the time, I would strongly recommend it - Dr. Shrikaanth has done a fabulous job). As in many other compositions, the Maharaja, a devout SrI vidyA upAsaka, has invoked the unified form of the dEvi in most, if not all his kRtis on the dEvi, this one included - with aspects of lakshmi, sarasvati, and pArvati blended in one form. This is not different from some kRtis of Sri MD -for example, hiraNmayIm lakshmIm is on lakshmi, but the caraNam ends with 'girijAm, tAm indirAm'.

However, like Sri MD, the mahAraja did not mix up the concepts of Siva and vishNu as manifestations of the one belnded being in the same way (for example, the viruttam that Smt. MSS sings as a preface to 'enta mAtramuna' - tAzh SaDaiyum, nIL muDiyum, ponn mazhuvum, cakkiramum - is a verse on Sankara nArAyaNa - a blended form of Siva and vishNu).

Thanks a lot to all of you.

But in "Hiranmayim" Dikshithar says "Girijamtham" - which is interpreted as "The one dear to Girija" and Indira is a name of Godess Lakshmi. I do not think in this song Dikshithar has addressed other than Godess Lakshmi.

But I understand the concept of seeing all forms of Devi as one.

I agree.
girijAmtAM means one who is close to or dear to girijA

Doesn't Sri MD also say, 'guruguha mAtula kAntAm, lalitAm'

guruguha mAtula kAntAm = guha's maternal uncle, aka vishNu's consort = lakshmi = lalitA, right??

Fair enough, Ravi. But lalitA strict, ly means only a lovely woman.
If you check Lakshmi Ashottara, her names include:
zivA, kAmAkSI, navadurgA, mahAkAlI... http://www.drikpanchang.com/hindu-names ... names.html
