Bangalore Brothers @ Raghavendra Mutt, Yelahanka New Town, Bengaluru

Post by sukumar »

Last evening I attended the concert by Bangalore Brothers ( Hariharan and Ashok) at Raghavendra Mutt, Yelahanka New Town, Bengaluru. The event details ar
It was organized as a part of annual celebrations of Sree Gurumangala Eye Foundation & Rangalakshmi Netralaya.
titled 'Rangavaibhavam – 2015'

Venue : Raghavendra Mutt, Yelahanka New Town,Bengaluru

The program was supposed to start at 6.00 but delayed by only 70 minutes.

Carnatic Vocal by Bangalore Brothers / Vittal Rangan on violin/ Ambattur Babu on Mrudangam/ Amruth Kumar on morsing.

The concert began with Jaya Jaya swamin jaya jaya of Narayanateertha in Nata ragam. it was followed by 'Kalpana' swaram.
It was followed by Ranganathude in Sourashtram rendered neatly.

Then sri Ashok sang an Ugabhoga in Bhairavi ( Thilakaviduvenu baaro...) follwed by Odi Baarayya of Purandara Dasa.

There was a beautiful alapane of Surutti. it was indicating to Sri venkata girisham alokaye. and my guess was right :) They did a good neraval at alamElumangA samEtam. in the swaram sung thereafter ma-ga-pa-ma-ri was highlighted.

Later again Sri Ashok started Kalyani alapane... he began by taking elements from Ata tala varnam Vanajakshi and Himadri suthe paahimam
but it was good. EtAvunarA nilakaDa was the chosen piece. sItA gauri vAgIshvari became neraval point and 'Kalpana' swaram.

Here i have to mention/ask the correctness of the word Kalpana in Kalpana swaram.... as in the beginning Nata raga krithi and here too the artists took a major portion of the swaras from Ata tala varnam. Nata raga krithi swaras resembled Panchratna krithi swara pattern of the 3rd and 4th charanam for a major portion and modified only the last bit... in kalyani krithi 'd,,n,d,ma,ga,ga,ma,ga,ri,ni,sa' and such one more was used. is it not kalpita sangeetha/ some one elses composed pattern. and not fitting in the above said format? i have heard them do it even before also in two of the recordings...

Then followed the Tani by the mrudangist and morsinger! ( :!: :?: )

Thank you for the review. I finally figured out why you had highlighted kalpana svarams!
On a lighter note (totally tongue-in-cheek): Morsinger - interesting use - Brings up images of someone who plays the moharsing, or someone who sings more, or someone who sings for more (buttermilk)? ;)
