You should have attended the AMS Easy Methods seminar.Akkela explained his methods of teaching children which uses technology Audio and video. He advocated teaching Laya is the first step before further lessons. He also advocated use of CASIO keyboard in the initial stages.Of course many technical pointsI could not follow. Please listen to his seminar available in Shaale.com.Recommend interested parents should use AMS methods from the age of 3.His lessons are in Youtube and can be accessed by any one.

Happy to see the results. Parents indeed play an important role in cultivating interest in children for CM. Also my two cents......there is one important thing to be implemented to attract more youngsters to attend and appreciate carnatic concerts. There should be a format for lay listeners too in addition to the regular format practised nowadays. Like the concerts of bhakti sangeet utsav where many kritis are sung sans detailed AlApanAs, RTPs, there should be concerts for youngsters where sahityam is emphasised. Bhakti filled songs are sung as youngsters are hard pressed for time and may not have much knowledge about AlApanAs or RTPs. To cater to this segment, which I am sure constitutes most of the youth population, such concerts also must be held in equal measure to attract youngsters to concerts.

HNB
I actually watched the AMS webcast for some time. I also saw a big video uploaded some weeks ago on the AMS methods demo done in Hyderabad(?)
As I think I have mentioned a few times recently, I am a big believer in widening the reach and employing modern teaching "fun" methods in CM. I am quite impressed with the SaPa project I quoted elsewhere.
But again, I am neither a teacher nor a atudent of CM. I am only an enthusiast. Perhaps the lowest specimen too :)

Priyaram,
I agree. Also the concerts meant for young audiences should be somewhat interactive.
I know quite a few CM artistes who take special pains to do such demos. There is one YT video where Shreya Devnath does a session at Vidya Mandir (organised by Anil Srinivasan perhaps)

Thanks Sir. Its really the need of the hour to have concerts catering to the needs of youngsters. They have interest but are not too free to sit and appreciate intricate neravals, kalpanaswarams etc. So they dont attend concerts at all. Time to have concerts for the enthusiastic youngsters too.

I also participated in that survey. And the stats (despite the small sample size), I can see clearly that it's very important for the parents and teachers to be proactive so that their children sustain the interest. That has to be passed on across the generations. It also ties in neatly with my experience that where I did not see the parents showing any interest, it was only a matter of time before their children would forget CM altogether to the competition.

Sachi, as usual you are the do-er, taking the initiative to conduct such surveys. I participated in that as well and it is good to see the results. Thanks very much for your initiative. I think, while some results are predictable, there are some answers that are interesting like the one about whether CM should be a compulsory part of school syllabus, given our biases here.

It will also be good to ask the youngsters to take a survey about their interest or lack of interest in classical music and which of the measures they think will work, given their knowledge about themselves and their peers. I am not sure now which forum or web site will be a good target for that.

VKM,
Really it's early days yet!
People at MA and a group of musicians conducted a day long event y'day for kids.
Similar initiatives are on elsewhere.
People like AMS and SaPa are introducing CM teaching in easy ways.
I know a school where a big pilot is on.

I somehow feel we should actually do things, in any which way, and measure results. I think that kids, especially Indian kids, have a natural, unmeasured, affinity in varying positive degrees to music. How to tap it, and enrich their lives, with firmness but fun, creative aids and methods, but no violence, is a topic for greater minds and souls I think.
From Tagore to Rukmini Devi, from Ravikiran to many other contemporaries, all great people have said and done things to firm up my belief in this.

There was a program VEENEYA BEDAGU in memory of Veena Seshanna and Swara murthy VN Rao at Bangalore Gayana Samaja.Junior concerts were held bet 04:45 to 06:15PM.Senior ones from 06:30PM.It was noticed that Junior concert musicians did not stay back to listen to the senior concerts.Perhaps a disturbing trend in Bangalore. The students of a particular teacher attend only the guru's concerts and not concerts of other vidwans.
