Dear DR.M.NARMADHA,
I WAS EXCITED to receive the SUPERLATIVE encomiums about your BRILLIANT concert on VIVADHI RAGAS AT WHERE ELSE but SARASWATHI - in my mind THE PREMIER ORGANISATION LED BY Sri. N.V.Subramanian (my class mate) who has been a POINEER in promoting the PROPER aspects of Carnatic MUSIC for over 50 years- & I have taken the trouble of finding out some details.....
As the major & only GENUINE DISCIPLE OF THE ONE & ONLY M.S.G. (whose Solos& accompaniment to BMK & T.S.Kalyanaraman ARE THE HIGH LIGHTS OF THE GOLDEN AGECARNATIC MUSIC) I was excited to learn some details: Among the items presented:
Jagadanadakaraka MASTERFULLY presented by GIANTS starting with ARI, Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer, Semmangudi & M.S.S.
RAAGAVARDHINI & COMPOSITION OF BMK; Bhagayanayya (Chandrajyothi) of MLV; Gaana amudhabhanam (Jyotiswarupini) by M.M.I. which CHEMBAI IN I.F.S. descibed as HEAVEN ON EARTH!; Arul Seyya Vendum Ayya ( Rasikrapriya) by the immortal T.S.Kalyanaraman ; & JAYATHI jAYATHI OF Mayuram Viswanatha Iyer made IMMORTAL by GNB&MMI which MMI SHOUTED FROM THE AUDIENCE TO GNB to render it among others.
Apart from S.Rajam & DR.S.Ramanathan who incidentally rendered lec/dem + full concert of VIVADHI RAGAS WHERE ELSE EXCEPT SARASWATHI- I do not know of any other rendering this CHALLENGING CONCERT. In my opinion DR.M.N . is one of the few capable of doing it today-
I REQUEST YOU TO:
1) Write the DETAILS OF EVERY ITEM YOU RENDERED W/ COMMENTS.
2) Release it as a COMMERCIAL dvd or cd for Listeners to hear, learn & as a record of the FIRST SUCH CONCERT in TWENTY FIRST CENTURY..
SEM'S remarks in Saraswathi about S.Rajam's CONCERT IN SARASWATHI IS STILL RINGING IN MY EARS: SEM REGRETTED that he had not learnt enough VIVADHIS & put emphasis on them having bought the usual non-sense about this bringing bad luck etc.....THANKS& CONGRAGULATIONS TO Saraswathi & N.V.S. for this initiative & your usual penchent for INNOVATION........vkv

No doubt this is a very innovative approach to programming. I attended the concert on Monday and Ms Narmada's concerts. it was indeed a pleasure to listen to Narmada any day. I will ever remain a fan of the legend MSG and we only have one person today that can truly claim his legacy.. others only try to mimic.

On a more serious note, i did feel it was an overdose to listen to vivadi ragas for 2 hrs at stretch. After a while the while the mind yearns for a kalyani, kambhoji or a sankarabharanam.

I am very much in favour of innovative approaches especially when there are lots of FAKES disobeying the tradition, rules, grammar etc & claiming to be ORIGINAL & CREATIVE.. VKV ....(Dr.M.N.) LIKE S.Rajam, Dr.S.Ramanathan have been POINEERS IN DEMOLISHING SUPERSTITION & PROVING if you are GOOD & TECHNICALLY CAPABLE VIVADHIS CAN BE EQUALLY ENCHANTING..... N.V.S has after almost 50 years presented one evening to emphasise CREATIVITY!

Salubrious and robust Vivadi Raaga Violin Concert of Dr.M.Narmadha.

DrMNarmadha proved her total commitment to Musical Excellence and Grace through her Vivadi Raaga concert.

As Sri NVSubramaniam remarked Dr.Narmadha had done a stupendous concert by presenting the various facets of Vivadi Raaga with varieties of compositions and composers.This reflected her hard work in doing a proper home work.

Starting from Kanakangi ( Srigananaadam of Tyagaraja) followed by Jagadanandakaraka ,the concert was very briskly paced and had all the well known and lesser known Kritis as part of the entire concert.SriRamaSaraswathi ( Nasamani) from the Muthusamy Dikshitar school,
Jyotisvaroopini ( Ganamudhapanam) and Bagayanayya ( Chandrajyothi) and Ragavardhani ( composition of DrBalamuraliKrishana,Ganasudharasame) and the crowning Glory had ArulSeyya ( Rasikapriya).

The expansive Tanam was a clear hallmark of DrNarmadha's extraordinary control on her instrument and reminded people of her legendary father and violinist Guru Sri MSGopalakrishnan.

The exposition of Rasikapriya in chromatic sequences in both purvanga and uttatanga had deft handling in Dr.Narmadha" s Vivadi Raaga concert.
The added bonus was DrNarmadha"s very brief introduction before every song, in a nutshell explaining very clearly and singing the sahityams in her naturally gifted voice.

Dr.Narmadha pointed out that the Vivadi Raga collections were beautifully handled by KotisvaraIyer and Shri Parur Sundaram Iyer wrote the forward for KandaKaanamudam and that KotisvaraIyer composed many songs at their Mylapore home in Apparsamy Koil Street.

There was a good turn out of audience and the concert started right on time and it was a Torrential Melodic Downpour of Vivadi Ragas.
The concluding item was SindhuBhairavi Tarana and she presented it in the typical Ghazal style contrasting with two rishabham,madhayamam,dhaivatham which was very enlivening to the audience.

Shertalai Anantakrishnan Mridangam and Puducottai N Ramachandran Ghatam enlivened the concert with their lovely melodic rhythmic support.
The concert was extraordinary in every way and I learnt a lot .

Many audience reflected my thought and were totally amazed at this brilliant concert.
