It was a wonderful concert as always. His sruti aligned voice was in fine mettle. When I entered, the slokam was just started. So I missed the opening line of the slokam. But I was in cloud nine when I heard the slokam. It was on Pazhavangadi Ganapathy- my own area in Trivandum and also had reference to Padmanabhana maruga. (Pazhavangadi Ganapathi temple is a very famous temple in Trivandrum).

Another reason for my happy about the concert is the selection of songs- Devi neeye tunai, Enduku dayaradu, Neyallathini etc not his usual choice. The elaborate alapana of Keeravani as the second song added instant weight to the concert. All the ragams were elaborate and stood testimony to his manodharmam. For time constraints, he skipped the swarams for Enduku dayaradu. But the neraval at Thyagarajavinuta Taraka charita was sumptuous. For E thaunera, neraval was at an unusual place- Siva Madhava Brahmaadula enta.

The accompanists contributed significantly to the success of the concert. VV Ravi’s violin returns were superb. Srimushnam Raja Rao’s anticipation and filling of the gaps were highly enjoyable. The thani lasted for 20 minutes and was appreciable.

One crib though. He started E thaunera from the anupallavi. Idont like start from ap except in Kshetrajnar padams or some specific ST padams. This song Ethaunera has got a cascade of sangathis in the pallavi.When rendered each sangathi twice in a systematic manner, it adds charm and considerable weight to the song. After ap, it is just a ritual to sing the pallavi, The beauty of the sangathis is lost.
