Malladi Brothers at Hindu Temple, Tampa,FL
SWARALAYA of Tampa, FL. presented a carnatic concert by the brothers accompanied by Embar KaNNan on the violin and NeyvEli nArAyaNan on the mridangam at the Hindu temple auditorium on April 11, 2015.
The program commenced at 6:20 p.m. The brothers started with
1. the Begada varnam "Intha chAlamu" of PattaNam Subramania Iyer
2. They then sang PapanAsam Sivan's Karaharapriya composition "GaNapathiyE karuNAnithiyE", preceded by the slokam
"gajAnanam bhoothagaNAthi sEvitham". I hear this karaharapriya composition for the fist time, as far as I can remember.
3. ThyagarAja's Srirangam Pancharatnam in ThOdi "RAjuvedala jOOtha murArE" was the next item. Neraval and kalpana swaras were at "kAvEri thEEramunu"
4. Next was ThyagarAja's "rAma ninnu nammina" in Mohanam with kalpana swarams at the pallavi
5. Submain: Subha pantuvarALI- alApana for 10 min. followed by violin return for 6min. and Dikshitar's "Sri SatyanArAyaNam upAsmahE"
Swaram at "mathsya kUrma varAhAvathara"
6. DEvAmrutha varshini composition "Evarani" of Thyagaraja was covered in 7 min. In my younger days this raga was called "nAda ChintAmaNi"
7. A rasikA's request in DEnuka "kAmadEnukAm AsrayE" was next. The composer's name was mentiond, but I couldn't remember that !
8. Very brief coverage of T's sAmajavaragamana in HindOLam in 3 minutes !
9. MAIN rAga of the day: kAmbOdhi-AlApana for 13 min + violin 8 min followed by BadrAchala rAmadAsa's 'E'maiyya rAma brammEndrAdu". Neraval at
"karivarada badrAdri nilaya". kalpanA swarams by the two brothers alternating was very pleasant. Thani by NeyvEli nArAyaNan followed .
At this point I chose to go upstairs to have "dharsan" before the temple closed and missed a couple of thukkadas requested by the audience.
12. A composition in HusEni tuned by NedunErigaru: "antharangamilla sriharikEnu"
13. Next was pAhimAm paramakripAlO of NArAyaNa theertha, retuned in Jonpuri by NEdunUrigAru.
14 A composition on HanumAn in KayANI brought closure to the concert.
All in all it was a very good 3 hrs. concert, worth driving 125 mile each way.

Sundararajan,
I thought your drive was within a hundred miles! Some outing with rain pelting, on your way back! Brave doc! Wonder if the brothers knew about your long trek--they would have thanked you with a request of yours, perhaps! That Emayya rAmA alone would have made you not to bother to request a song. GAru singing it has left an indelible memory in our hearts...
NedunerigAru, it was noted that did not sing RTP in all his concerts when I asked, "No RTP in the brothers' Cleveland concert?". The shaNmukhapriya RTP GAru sang--and it was only a small town concert in his tour in NA--was a delightful journey into that rAgA with which my admiration for his singing grew tenfold...

Here is a fantabulous Sankarabaranam Pallavi by Sri Nedunuri. He and his music will be missed !

Thank you Mr. Lakshman for the information.
Yes Arasi, when I was listening to their Emayya rAma, I was reminiscent of their Guru's rendering of the song in person and in my collection.

The Emayya rAma conversation follows Malladi Brothers and rightfully so. In San Diego they did not sing it and in discussion of that concert, there were mentions of how their guru has sung it at various levels of elaboration along with Varsha sharing quite a few renditions of their guru. In Chicago, they sang it just as a song with out any elaboration and now in Tampa they sang it as the main. Very nice.
Their concert tour can be rightfully titled "Emayya rAmA: Sri. Nedunoori Krishnamoorthy memorial concert tour by Malladi Brothers"

Thank you, Sundararajan for the review of Malladi Brothers concert. I did not hear them in the Cleveland Aradhana and I have to listen to them On Demand. I don't see anywhere how to get them on Demand.

THanks for the review. I will post the Raleigh concert review which happened the day before. I was fortunate to not only attend but host Malladi Sreeram garu and Neyveli narayanan. It was great listening to Sreeram garu's expereinces with their gurus.

I know that this kriti (#7) was composed by a young Rigveda pandit, Sri Yanamandra Srinivasa Sarma from Kovvur (near Rajamandry). Even Malladi brothers mentioned the same composer's name when they sung this song in Margazhi Utsavam in 2013 December (if I am not mistaken).Lakshman wrote:# 7 is by Anandanatha Sadguru. # 12 is an Annamacharya composition.
After talking with him, he mentioned that he dedicated this song to his father and Srividya sampradaya guru, Sri Anandanatha sadguru!

Namaste,
The kriti "kAmadhEnukAM...." was composed by a great srividya upasaka who stays in Kovvur. The name is Shri.Yanamandra Venugopala Sastry whose srividya diksha name is "sriyAnandanAtha". Later, his son, who is again a great rg vedic scholar and srividya upasaka shri.yanamanda srinivasa sarma, tuned this kriti which was sung by Malladi Brothers.
It is about the "vAk dEvata" in the form of kAmadhEnu whose esoteric meaning can be found in the rg vedic mantra "praNO dEvi saraswathi....".

Sundar Rajan sir,
Inta calamu is by Veena Kuppayyar, not by Patnam Subramanya Iyer. Very different kettle of fish..
