Re: TM Krishna at JN Tata Aud Bangalore
I find the violin more compelling.
An interesting thing happened. After HKV played mukhari, TMK hums and says, ‘I tried something else, but after that essay it is difficult to get out of it,’ and launches into ‘ososi’. If a seasoned musician finds it difficult to take his mind away from a brief treatment of a classic raga, what to speak of ordinary mortals like me, when I hear one brief alapana and then switching to something else. That precisely is the point about concert. Mukhari was so sweet, but the switch from sahana was difficult to stomach for me, just as TMK found it difficult to switch from mukhari. For a moment I wondered if I got the essay by TMK wrong.

Hamswadwani VATHAPI GANAPATIM sung as the penultimate song was a real treat. If u forget the conventions, this concert was very satisfying. The Mridangam by Manoj Siva was very smooth and added value to the concert. As pointed out Mukhari Alapana and the song with brief nervals were the high point of the day.
Any technical assessment is beyond me.

Ohh it's there alright, I thought the same, you just have to fast forward to about 30 mins into the video, unless you want to hear the speechesarasi wrote:Bhagwan,

Enjoyable concert. He mangles Teliyaleru's lyrics in a few spots though

If Saint Tyagarajar were in the audience, he'd probably go:
Cakkani Ariyakudi margamu yuntaka
Sandula Dooranela O' Krishna !

Ramamantra Sir,
It is 'chakkani rajamargamu yundaga'.
Krishna Thyagaraja answered 'Teliyaleru Rama(mantra) Bhakthi margamunu'. Also continued 'ariya' vazhi edarku arindu vittadum, ullam urugum manadin unarvinile 'oori' ponadume'; Manadukerpa kaladi pokkinile senrdu koodi povom; Kanum, kanda, kandukonda agzhagai, meymarandu: vizhindu, vagzhiyinai marandu satru vilagi'.
Mahesh Sir,
One of the compositions in the TMK's favorite list is Dhenuka-Teliyaleru Rama. Great Maestro Nagasvara Vidwans have delineated Dhenuka and Teliyaleru Rama exhaustively and beautifully taking inspiration from Karaikudi Arunachalam, one of the Greatest Maestros.

Ramamantra, No Thyagaraja would not have said that because Thyagaraja would have enjoyed the music for what it is without worrying about format etc. :shaking my head: If that is all your have to think about this concert, then I wonder if this format thing has created a by-lane from which you are finding it hard to get out of.

For all his prescience, Thyagaraja would not have known the ARI format!

KVC Sir,
Thyagaraja with his compositions of great variety in scale, scope and also with primacy for madhyama kalam laid the foundation for the 'ARI format' of Sabha cutcheri conception, creation, planning, execution and achieving the results.

The songs sung by Sri TM Krishna did not adhere to the Kutcheri format. However each piece he sang was a gem and melodious. In fact I liked Manoj Siva's accompaniment.
