varAli (valapu dAsa http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=10056), sahAnA (ini enna pEchu) & concluded with surati (vangakkadal).

Earlier the songs were mApala velai, lOkAvana caturA, nI bhajana gAna, hecharikaga rA, gOpanandana and sari evvaramma. Every song except gOpanandana had a raga/sketch and nereval/swaram.

JV - he needs special mention. He totally rocked; especially the way he embellished ykk @ pallavi was awesome.

Very nice concert. No doubt she is a nyaanasthi but I have one humble suggestion. I really wish that she doesnt sing like a 60 year old. The kind of unusual noises she makes while she sings can be avoided. She is a very hardworking person. It is very evident but if she can bring in a much more pleasing voice culture, it would be great. For example, during the kalpana swaras for mapala velasi in asaveri, please notice how she ends the word maapaala. She ends it with a note that is really unnecessary. I understand that she is from the Brindamma school and all. It will be really nice if she can absorb just the good aspects of the Brindamma baani. At the end of the day, how much ever technically sound or classically sound one's music is, it should sound soothing to the ears. This is my humble suggestion. To take it or leave it, its her choice. I am a fan of Aishwarya minus the unnecessary noises.

# 4 thenjasattaa .. Not sure if you are referring to the 'over emballishments' AVR has off late been resorting to.(when you say unusual noises she makes). If yes, I fully agree with you, and that needs to be avoided or atleast curtailed. Excessive oscialltion of notes continously carried out througout the concert robs aesthetic appeal, and not soothing to the ears as well. These, coupled with 'Ottam"( speedy rendition) is sure recipe for pitching lapses. You can find them in the first two songs.
No doubts about her extraordinary talent & musical calibre, needs to do some introspection to bring about sustained
all round acceptance. Sure to be a sought after musician.

Initial hiccups apart, a classy concert. Bhairavi stands out as if to echo 'Nee sari evaramma' :)

I agree with these observations - I find her voice production a little distracting from the high quality of music that the girl possesses.
I surely hope and pray she absorbs this and rises above this and does not let it become her Achilles' Heel.

You know, just 5 years ago she was singing like a 40 year old. So amazing progress, it looks like!

I find these observation interesting because I really liked Aishwarya Vidya's singing whenever I heard her (youtube mostly). Yet, there was something which made me wonder why I couldn't instantly connect with her. What you folks say makes me see it. I think of other young singers who may not even be there where she is in her vidvat, but yes, their youthful expression is somewhat missing here. No comparisons, but with a few others in her age group who are mature in their singing, I hear their youthful expression all through.

MS had it well into old age, and even Pattamma, given her deep voice and for the very traditional school she came from, retained it.

It's natural for older vidushis to 'sound' mature, and they can't help it, I suppose. Still, I think of our Neela Ramgopal. How youthful she still can sound, eighty this year, bless her! The word 'verve' somewhat explains what I'm trying to say. 'tIrmAnam' shows maturity, but musical expression of it needn't be measured out?? Just my 'not so well educated in music' reaction perhaps...

My comment was tongue-in-cheek and I don't believe there is anything like "singing like a 60 year old".

What thenjasatta may mean is "singing in an old-fashioned way" as I don't think he means "singing in a physically debilitated manner".

But I think that is quite deliberate. And why should everyone sing in the same stereotypical manner (thenjasatta's ideal mid 20s vocalist) ?

Thought the Nayaki was divine in the concert.

My point is that she needs to get rid of those unpleasant voice production and over embellishments as someone else mentioned above. When did i say that the 20 year olds sing in a stereotypical manner ? BTW, they dont sing in a stereotypical way. They all have their own styles but very pleasing styles.. Their music is not very similar at all. Im sorry it is not stereotypical. My point here is not about stereotypical or not. My point is that at the end of the day, the voice production and embellishments should be pleasing to the ears. By 60 year old, I meant that she should get rid of her over embellishments and her current voice production. If she wishes to sing like Brindamma, she will appeal to only a very select few. There are many musicians who sing chaste classical music and at the same time have a huge aam junta followers. Example : Nedunuri, Pattamma, etc.... She could be one of those musicians in the future..... If she continues singing like this she will have the following of a Brindamma or a Vegavahini. Its now left to her to decide if she wants to belong to the former tribe or the latter. If it is the former, she has to consciously change the aspects pointed out earlier. It is left to her to decide. I will still remain her fan minus the over embellishments and voice production.

I understand what you are saying.

Brindamma was who you meant when you said 60 year old.

Or she may choose to sing in her own way.
