It was the inaugural day of Bharat Sangeet Utsav. MSS 100 was the underlying theme. Before Aishwarya’s concert, a group of 100 young musicians from the Sargam choir paid their homage to MS Amma by singing her popular songs, Mudhakaratha Modhakam, Sriman Narayana, Dolayam, Hanuman Chalisa, Raghupathy Raghava Raja Ram, Kurai Onrum Illai, Nagendra Haraya and Maithreem Bhajata. They were in for a surprise when Sri Shashikiran announced mid way that they would be joined by the great granddaughter of the legend. The students were trained by Sudha Raja and their singing reflected the high quality of their training.

Coming to Aishwarya’s concert, this was the list

Vachamago Charame – Thyagaraja – Adi – Kaikavasi
Sri Ranga Pura Vihara - Dikshitar - Brindavana Saranga – Rupakam
Saroja Dala Netri –Syama Sastri - Sankarabaranam – Adi
Mai Hari Charana ki dasi - Meera

It was just a 50 minute kutcheri. Aishwarya took the audience back down memory lane and brought back memories of her illustrious Great Grand mother and Grand mother. Sankarabharanam was delineated with the trademark pidis of MSS. It is easy to say that Aishwarya sings like MS, but nothing of MS is easy to sing. The Neraval and swaras were captivating. Sri M.A.Krishnaswamy supported the main artist very well and one could hear his loud vocal appreciations of Aishwarya too. J Vaidhyanathan embellished the concert with his superb mridangam support. Guruprasad gave good support too. However the Ghatam volume was a bit low.

Sri Shashikiran mentioned in particular about how Aishwarya immediately agreed to join the students without any fuss upon his request. After the kutcheri he thanked the artist for her wonderful presentation of the gems of MS Amma and said that Aishwarya has a bright future.

Thanks for the upload. A nice concert.
As an old world man, I was happy to see Aishwarya sport a prominent vermillion mark on the forehead.
Aishwarya has a legacy to live up to, which is by no means easy. Those who cherish memories of MS look up to her to imbibe it and perpetuate it. Even if Vishnu or Siva objects to it, she must stick to it. No doubt, as an intelligent youngster who has shown remarkable application in CM and emulating MS, she will let her personality and manodharma issue into her music organically. But, the base of MS music has to take deep roots. She will do well by striking a judicious balance and letting the memory of MS live through her music.
I have a request. It was mentioned how some people pine why MS has not rendered Lalitha Sahasranamam. I am one of those. It will be nice if in course of time Aishwarya tries it in her sweet voice.
Best wishes to Aishwarya in her triumphant march to a star in the world of CM.

You can hear her melodious voice this minute if you go to the Hindusthani Sangeeth section--Eri Ali-Yaman kalyAni thread. She sings the rAgA along with youngsters who are learning HM. Something to watch...
